Each morning, seahorse pairs—often species like "Hippocampus"—perform an intricate greeting that involves a hug and a dance. This ritual begins with the pair facing each other, intertwining their tails or grasping onto the same seagrass or coral.

They synchronize their movements, bobbing and swaying in a coordinated, almost choreographed display that can last several minutes. Their bodies may change color, signaling emotional connection or readiness to mate.

This dance serves multiple purposes. It reinforces pair bonding in these monogamous creatures, who often mate for life. The ritual also allows them to assess each other’s health and readiness for reproduction, as seahorses have a unique reproductive system where males carry the eggs in a brood pouch.

The physical closeness of the "hug"—where they entwine tails or bodies—symbolizes trust and partnership.
