The Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s C.E. Kord Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory has identified swine influenza in a pig submitted for necropsy this week. Additional testing will be performed to determine the strain. Swine influenza is a respiratory disease in pigs, and the Department would like to use this opportunity to remind producers about this pathogen.

We are encouraging livestock owners and producers to remain attentive and monitor their animals for any signs of illness. We also encourage producers and exhibitors to practice good biosecurity, especially at livestock shows and events. Preventive steps include limiting contact between animals from different herds, cleaning and disinfecting equipment and trailers, and monitoring animals closely before and after shows.

Common symptoms of swine influenza may include:
• Coughing
• Fever
• Nasal discharge
• Decreased appetite

If you believe your swine may be exhibiting symptoms consistent with influenza, please contact your veterinarian for guidance. Swine influenza is a treatable condition, and early veterinary consultation is the best way to support animal health and recovery.

We will provide further updates and additional information when available.
