The Mississippi Department of Health confirmed a rabies-positive bat was found in Desoto County. A pet owner found their dog with the dead bat in its mouth. The dog had been vaccinated against rabies and is fine.

The state has seen an increase in rabies-positive bat cases this year. Since January 1st, seven bats have tested positive for rabies. Most of these cases had human and pet exposure involvement. Last year we only had one rabies-positive bat case. A total of eleven positive bats were reported 2019-2024.

Bats are the most significant animal source of rabies in Mississippi. Protecting your pet against rabies helps to protect YOU from rabies.

Mississippi law requires anyone with a dog or cat must have the pet vaccinated against rabies at 3 months old, again at a year old, and at least every three years thereafter. The vaccination must be administered by a licensed veterinarian.

September 28th was World Rabies Day. This is the perfect time to double-check your pets are current on their rabies vaccination.

Today is and this year's theme is "Act Now: You, Me Community,” marking the first time in its 19-year history that the theme does not include the word "rabies," showing how well-established this movement has become. Whether you are an individual, part of an organization, or a decision-maker, the time to act is today. Here are some key takeaways from our "Rabies in the U.S." infographic.
🔵 In 2023, rabid animals in the U.S. totaled 3,760 - an increase of 5.1% from 3,579 in 2022.
🦇 Bats were the most frequently reported rabid animal in the U.S. in 2023. Over 1/3 of animal rabies cases in the U.S. in 2023 were bats.
0️⃣ Human cases of rabies in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in 2023.

Remember, the best way to protect your animals from this deadly disease is through vaccination and to keep them away from wildlife that can spread the disease. Learn more at avma.org/Rabies.

Six people in the US have died of rabies since last September, and the CDC is tracking 14 potential rabies outbreaks in 20 states. Unvaccinated dogs are the leading cause of human rabies deaths worldwide, but thanks to the success of vaccination campaigns, dogs with rabies are uncommon in the US, and infected bats are the primary vector. Emergency physician Leana Wen explains who should consider pre-exposure prophylaxis, what to do in the case of possible contact with a rabid animal, and how to prevent rabies exposure. https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/18/health/rabies-animal-vaccine-disease-health-wellness
