Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine)

Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine) We are a no-kill animal orphanage admitting stray cats and dogs through police or animal control.

In 1990, a dedicated group of Old Town/Orono citizens, concerned about the well-being of homeless cats and dogs in their communities, founded The Animal Orphanage. Thousands of lost or abandoned animals have found food, shelter, medical treatment and the comfort of a caring staff at the Orphanage over the years. Every effort is made to reunite the animal with its loving owners or arrange adoption into a new home.

Thank You to Shasta & Conroy Leary for Sponsoring Gus’ Kennel! 💙🐾

We are so grateful to Shasta & Conroy Leary for sponsoring Gus’ kennel! Your generosity ensures that Gus has everything he needs — from nutritious food and veterinary care to a safe, comfortable place to rest his head — while he waits for his forever family. Kennel sponsorships like yours make such a meaningful impact, giving our dogs love and stability during their time at the shelter.

And Gus is one very special pup. 🐶 This playful, goofy boy has a heart of gold and a tail that never stops wagging. During his time in foster care, Gus loved playing with his foster siblings all day long, proving just how much he enjoys the company of other dogs. He would be overjoyed to have a canine friend in his future home to romp, wrestle, and cuddle with.

Thanks to your sponsorship, Gus can continue shining while he waits for that perfect family. On behalf of Gus and all of us at the shelter — thank you, Shasta & Conroy, for your kindness and support. Your generosity helps give Gus the care, comfort, and joy he deserves until his forever family finds him. 💛

We’re officially full of dogs over here, and these pups are ready to take over your heart (and maybe your couch). Right now, we have 7 amazing dogs waiting for their forever homes, and a few more joining the party by the end of next week.

They’re full of love, personality, and the occasional sassy “excuse me I need more treats!” — but honestly, they deserve a family who will love them 🩵

By adopting, you’re not just giving a dog a home — you’re making space here at the shelter for the next furry friend who needs you’d think of it as a win-win, for you & for them.

Come meet these incredible pups next week to see why we love each and every one of them!

🐾 We Need YOU: Dog Walkers & Dog’s Day Out Volunteers! 🐾

Do you love spending time with dogs and want to make a BIG difference? We’re looking for volunteers to help with Dog’s Day Out — a special program where our shelter dogs get some much-needed one-on-one time outside the kennel!

What is Dog’s Day Out?
It’s all about giving our pups a break from shelter life with:
🐕 Fun walks in the neighborhood or park
🐕 Playtime and socialization
🐕 Lots of love, belly rubs, and attention
🐕 Helping dogs relax, burn off energy, and boost their confidence

This time outside is so important to their happiness and helps them get ready for their forever homes!

The dogs below are currently available for Dog’s Day Out and adoption:
📸 Marmaduke – A gentle giant who loves calm walks and snuggles. Great with people and other pets!
📸 Grace – A sweet, calm girl who thrives with patient love and quiet adventures.
📸 Keroppi – A 2-year-old bundle of energy who adores attention and playtime with other dogs.

Whether you can commit to regular dog walking or just want to volunteer occasionally for Dog’s Day Out adventures, we would LOVE to have you on our team!

🎉 REMEMBER CHESTNUT? 🎉

Last June, our sweet golden boy made headlines when he was found stranded on a roof, weighing just 50 pounds, battling Diabetes Insipidus and heartworms. His road to recovery was long—months of strict rest, careful treatments, and endless patience—but through it all, Chestnut never lost his gentle spirit. 💛

And now… HE DID IT! 🐾
Chestnut has been officially adopted by his amazing foster-turned-forever mom, Dee! After everything he’s endured, he’s finally getting to enjoy the life he deserves—long walks, playtime with his favorite toys, and all the love his heart can hold.

Car rides still make him a little nervous, but with Dee by his side, Chestnut is learning that the best adventures are just beginning.

From roof to rescue to forever home—Chestnut’s comeback is complete! 🏡💛

🌟 Kennel Sponsor Spotlight 🌟

We’re sending a huge thank you to Bangor Elks Lodge for sponsoring one of our double cat kennels in honor of Kurt Francis. Their generous support is helping us care for cats like Orion, who has been with us for 259 days.

Orion hasn't had much interest from potential adopters, but over time, she’s really started to come out of her shell. This sweet girl is learning that attention isn’t so bad, and she’s beginning to enjoy pets and playtime. Orion would love a forever home where she can explore, play, and be her quirky, curious self.

Sponsorships like this one help provide stability and enrichment to animals who need extra time to find their perfect match.
