Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine)

Animal Orphanage (Old Town, Maine) We are a no-kill animal orphanage admitting stray cats and dogs through police or animal control.

In 1990, a dedicated group of Old Town/Orono citizens, concerned about the well-being of homeless cats and dogs in their communities, founded The Animal Orphanage. Thousands of lost or abandoned animals have found food, shelter, medical treatment and the comfort of a caring staff at the Orphanage over the years. Every effort is made to reunite the animal with its loving owners or arrange adoption into a new home.

🚨 COMMUNITY NOTICE: Dog Licensing, Rabies Vaccination & Return to Owner Policy 🐾

At The Animal Orphanage, your pet’s safety is our top priority—and that includes making sure we're all following Maine’s pet laws.

📌 Did you know?
✔ All dogs over 6 months must be licensed in the town where they live
✔ To be licensed, they must have a current rabies vaccination
✔ Unlicensed or unvaccinated dogs must remain at the shelter until vaccinated & licensed

If your dog comes into our care and isn’t up to date on vaccines, we’ll help schedule the soonest appointment—whether through your vet, our vet, or a local clinic. 🏥 While waiting, your pet will stay with us until they’re all set to go home.

❤️ We know being apart from your pet is hard. Our goal is always to reunite you as quickly—and safely—as possible.

🐾 Meet Atlas! 🐾

Atlas is a 1.5-year-old sweetheart who can be a little shy at first but warms up fast with treats and kind words. Once he feels safe, his goofy, playful side shines!

He’s learning how to sit and walk on leash and would love a patient home where he can keep building confidence. Atlas does well with other dogs and could happily join a pup sibling after a meet-and-greet.

Fork became a local celebrity this morning & she had a lot to say! Fork is FeLV+ and looking for a home that will understand her needs!

Watch her news segment here: https://www.wabi.tv/2025/04/22/animal-orphanage-old-town-meet-fork/

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that infects cats and impairs their immune system. It’s one of the most common infectious diseases in cats, especially those that spend time outdoors or in group housing.

FeLV is mainly transmitted through close, prolonged contact—it is not airborne.
Common ways FeLV spreads:

* Grooming (saliva)
* Sharing food/water bowls or litter boxes
* Bites from infected cats
* From mother to kittens (during pregnancy or nursing)
* Blood transfusions (rare)

FeLV can cause various issues depending on the cat’s overall health and how the virus progresses. Some cats show no symptoms for months or even years.
Potential symptoms:

* Weight loss
* Pale gums (anemia)
* Poor coat condition
* Fever
* Enlarged lymph nodes
* Diarrhea
* Lethargy
* Recurring respiratory or skin infections
* Reproductive problems in unspayed females

You can lead more about FeLV & Fork by visiting our website: https://www.animalorphanageoldtown.com/felv-cats

Fork is now up for adoption at the Animal Orphanage in Old Town.

🏡💛 Kennel Sponsorship Shoutout: Julie French & Ed Therrien 💛🏡

Please join us in thanking Julie French & Ed Therrien for their incredible generosity in sponsoring Daisy’s kennel during her healing journey.

Daisy is a 6-year-old Bluetick Coonhound who has already stolen the hearts of our staff with her sweet, goofy spirit. She recently tested positive for heartworm, and her recovery will require a full year of rest, medical care, and gentle support.

Thanks to Julie and Ed’s sponsorship, Daisy has a safe and comfortable place to rest while she begins this journey—but what she really needs now is a foster-to-adopt home where she can heal in peace and comfort, surrounded by love.

If you’ve been thinking about fostering, Daisy would be forever grateful for a calm space to recover in—her care will be fully covered by us during treatment!

Want to help Daisy on her road to recovery?
You can donate toward her heartworm treatment here:

Thank you, Julie and Ed, for being a bright light in Daisy’s life. Together, we’re giving her the second chance she deserves. 💛🐾

💛 Meet Daisy — A Sweet, Goofy Girl With a Heart That Needs Healing 💔

When Daisy, a 6-year-old Bluetick Coonhound, arrived at our shelter with her best friend Lady, it didn’t take long for her to charm every single one of us. Daisy is goofy in the best way—she flops dramatically onto her bed, gives full-body tail wags when she sees her favorite people, and leans in gently for affection. She’s the kind of dog who brings light and laughter into the room, just by being herself.

But during her first vet visit for routine vaccines, Daisy tested positive for heartworm—a diagnosis we weren’t prepared for, and one that changed her path dramatically.

🐾 What Is Heartworm?
Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and cause parasitic worms to grow in a dog’s heart and lungs. These worms can severely impact a dog’s health over time, and left untreated, the condition can become life-threatening.

Unfortunately, we are seeing more cases of heartworm right here in Maine, and Daisy is just one of many dogs now facing this incredibly difficult journey.

🩺 Daisy’s Road to Recovery
Daisy’s treatment plan will stretch across the next 12 months, and it won’t be easy:

She will undergo a series of strong injections to kill the heartworms slowly and safely.

She must remain on strict rest—no running, no playing, no excitement—for the duration of her recovery. Any increase in heart rate can put her at serious risk.

She’ll need consistent vet visits, medications, and monitoring as her body heals.

Through it all, Daisy deserves a soft bed, a calm environment, and a kind human to help her feel safe and loved.

That’s why we’re also looking for a foster-to-adopt home for Daisy—a peaceful place where she can recover surrounded by love, with the full support of our shelter team and medical staff.

💛 How You Can Help
We’re working to raise $10,000 to give Daisy the very best shot at recovery.

You can help by:

🩷 Donating to her care: https://animalorphanage.networkforgood.com/projects/250735-help-daisy-fight-for-her-life-and-find-a-home

🏡 Opening your home as a foster-to-adopt guardian during Daisy’s treatment.

📣 Spreading the word by sharing her story with your network.

💬 A Reminder of What’s Possible
Last year, we faced a similar moment with Chestnut, a golden retriever who also tested positive for heartworm. The community rallied together, donated, and gave him a second chance—and thanks to your kindness, Chestnut is now living happily and comfortably in his forever home.

His recovery is still ongoing, but he’s doing beautifully—proof that heartworm doesn’t have to be the end of a dog’s story. It can be the beginning of a new one.

Now Daisy needs that same chance.

She’s trusting us to guide her through this. And with your help, we will.

From all of us—and from Daisy—thank you for helping us give her the love, the care, and the future she so deeply deserves.

🐾 Kennel Sponsored by The Old Town Governor’s Restaurant 🐾
Featuring our sweet girl, Lady!

We’re sending a big THANK YOU to our amazing friends at The Old Town Governor’s Restaurant for their continued support of our shelter! From hosting small fundraisers throughout the year to keeping a donation coin bank at their restaurant, Governor’s has been an incredible partner—and now, they’re sponsoring a kennel to help give animals a safe and cozy place to stay while they wait for forever homes. 💛

🎉 Lady will be available for adoption starting Friday, April 18th! 🎉

Currently calling their sponsored kennel home is Lady, a 2-year-old Bluetick Coonhound with a heart of gold and the classic stubborn, silly charm of a true hound. 🐶 She loves people, is super social, and always ready to soak up attention.

Lady has lived with other dogs before, and with slow introductions and a proper meet-and-greet, she may do well in a home with another pup. We’re not sure yet how she feels about cats, so a bit of patience and supervision would go a long way!

She’s still working on her basic manners—learning to sit, walk on a leash, and focus that goofy hound energy—but she’s eager to learn and even more eager to love. 💕

🎉 Lady will be available for adoption starting Friday, April 18th! 🎉

Thank you to The Old Town Governor’s for helping give Lady (and so many others) a safe space to land on their journey to a forever home. We couldn’t do this without you! 🐾

📍Stop in to The Governor’s in Old Town and show them some love for their support of shelter animals like Lady!

🐾 Kennel Sponsorship Shoutout 🐾

A huge thank you to the UMaine Custodial Staff for their generous sponsorship of a double cat kennel—currently home to our lovely long-eared friend, Sniffles the rabbit! 🐰💙

This gift was made in loving memory of Kurt Francis, and we’re honored to recognize his memory through this thoughtful act of compassion.

Meet Sniffles!
This beautiful girl is about 1.5 years old and has been with us for 172 days. Sniffles is a little shy at first, but once she warms up, she’s perfectly happy accepting affection. She loves her fresh veggies, enjoys exploring, and would thrive in a home where she can free roam and satisfy her curiosity.

Sniffles is extremely friendly, gets along great with other rabbits and even the cats, and she recently attended Bunny Yoga—where she had a blast hopping around and charming the whole class!

Thanks to the support of the UMaine Custodial Staff, Sniffles has a safe and spacious kennel to call her own while she waits patiently for her forever home.

Adoption Fee: $50

Thank you for helping make a difference in her journey. 💛

🎉 BIG NEWS! 🎉

After years of waiting, countless head boops, and just as many dramatic moments worthy of an emperor… KUZCO HAS BEEN ADOPTED! 👑✨

This sassy, confident, and sometimes mischievous boy has been in and out of the shelter since 2020, but today, we can finally say—he has found his forever kingdom!

Kuzco has been a beloved part of our shelter family, stealing hearts with his big personality and “my way or the highway” attitude. While he kept us entertained with his antics, we always knew he deserved a home where he could rule as the spoiled emperor he was born to be. And now, that day has finally come!

We cannot even begin to express how much our staff will miss him. 💛 From his dramatic demands for attention to his hilarious antics that kept us on our toes, Kuzco has left an unforgettable mark on all of us. While we may have shed a few tears as we watched him leave, we are extremely happy for him and can’t wait to see him thrive in his new kingdom.

A huge thank you to his adopter for giving Kuzco the happily-ever-after he’s been waiting for. We are beyond thrilled for this next chapter in his royal journey! 💛

Drop your favorite Kuzco memories in the comments and join us in celebrating this long-awaited adoption! 🥳🐾

🐾 Kennel Sponsor Shoutout! 🐾

A huge thank you to Dirigo Slipform, INC for sponsoring Bailey's kennel! Your generosity helps provide comfort and care for this beautiful girl while she waits for her perfect home.

Bailey is a stunning 7-year-old who can be incredibly sweet and affectionate—but always on her own terms. She takes time to adjust to new environments and appreciates patience as she settles in. She’s not a fan of young children, and we’re unsure how she’d do with other animals.

💲 Adoption Fee: $80
🏡 Could you be the one to give Bailey the loving, understanding home she deserves?

What does sponsoring a kennel do?

It ensures they receive the best care possible and helps bring attention to pets in need of loving homes. Sponsors like Dirigo Slipform, INC make a huge difference in the lives of shelter pets!

Thank you again, Dirigo Slipform, INC, for your support! 💙🐶
