Bearded Dragon Myth: āOnly feed insects smaller than the space between their eyes.ā
Youāll hear this everywhere in reptile keeping. But it didnāt come from science ā it came from old beginner advice.
Years ago, when lighting, heating and nutrition knowledge were limited, keepers needed a quick and simple way to reduce risks like choking or impaction in young reptiles. So the āeye spacingā rule became an easy visual guide.
Over time it was repeated in care sheets, pet shops and online groups until it became accepted as fact.
The reality is that bearded dragons are built to handle a wide range of prey sizes. They have strong jaws, a wide gape and are natural crushers.
What matters far more than the width of an insect is the overall setup and condition of the animal:
⢠Correct basking temperatures⢠Quality UVB exposure⢠Hydration⢠Feeder hardness and shape⢠The age and size of the dragon⢠How the individual animal feeds
A well set-up juvenile can often manage larger soft feeders without issue, while small hard-shelled insects can sometimes cause more trouble.
The āspace between the eyesā rule isnāt completely useless ā itās just very simplified.Good husbandry is always about the bigger picture.
Better information leads to better welfare.
