Today has been swell, chat. The spring has brought us back to life, here at CommonWealth. 🌞

Did you know that the application of compost minimizes soil loss by up to 86%? How about the fact that there’s been a 65% increase in composting programs worldwide just within the last five years? 💁🏻‍♀️

It was a doozy outside this mornin’. 👁️👄👁️

Despite the chilly rain and wind - we showed up! And we weren’t alone! A big thanks to the OCU and OUMed students who came through today, and to our youth volunteers! 😭 Suffering together is always better, we always say.

“Don’t forget the random compost fact of the day!” Is that what we heard someone say? 🤨 Well, we’d never.

Azteca ants have had a deep relationship with Cecropia trees, found in Central and South America, for what is believed to be hundreds of thousands of years. The Cecropia tree provides home and sustenance for the Azteca ants, and in return, the ants repair damage to the trees — patching holes with materials like plant parenchyma (tissue scraped from the tree’s interior), insect bodies, moss, ant waste, and even their own dead ant brethren. This waste is then broken down by fungi and bacteria — and everything works together to even decompose the toughest of materials like cellulose and chitin!

Anyway, composting has been around forever — it’s a process found repeated within nature everywhere, and we couldn’t have life without it! 🤪

Veggie seedlings will also be available for sale.

Hey chat, did I hear someone say they wanted a random fact about composting? 🤩 There’s a bird called the Australian Brush-Turkey that builds communal compost piles to incubate their eggs!

This is not a build and leave system though – the bird checks the temperature of the compost with its beak and then adds or remove compost material to maintain an ideal incubation heat.

The piles can be up to 12.7 cubic meters and weigh nearly 7000 kilograms! 🤪

A few years ago, CommonWealth launched an initiative to support individuals interested in market farming and enhancing their gardening skills. This year, we are partnering with 12 farmers, ranging from hobby gardeners to full-time market farmers.

The Partner Farmer program offers a combination of fertile growing beds, an irrigation system, additional infrastructure, and valuable community connections for new and emerging growers. Our newly constructed Wash/Pack Shed is a recent addition to our infrastructure improvements.

Each partner-farmer manages their own section of rows and has the freedom to decide what to plant and how to market their products. While partner-farmers pay a modest monthly fee for water and electricity, CommonWealth does not charge rent because we understand how challenging it can be for new growers to make ends meet.

Anyone interested in becoming a partner-farmer with CommonWealth is encouraged to email us at [email protected]

Hey gang! Today was cold! 😃

Once we build our compost bins, the internal temperature gets to 160F. For anyone with the question “is it hot enough to heat up a can of beans?”, the answer for you is yes, it sure is.

What makes it so hot is the community of thermophiles that does a majority of breaking down food waste during the composting process. We feed the life that converts waste into nutrients with both green (nitrogen) and brown (carbon).

We chop bigger food waste to encourage an environment for mesophiles and thermophiles to thrive during the composting process. 🤩

CommonWealth Urban Farms hosts and participates in community composting every Saturday from 9 am to noon, rain or shine. Our volunteers use locally sourced food waste to build up pallet bin compost piles, as well as perform other garden maintenance-related tasks. At the end of every session, we all come together and share announcements, talk about community organizing, and show up for each other in the ways that we can. We hope that you too join us!
