What do Milkweed, Worm Castings & Green Posole have in common? You can find them all right here on Saturday!

Milkweed: while weeding the greenhouse, I found some vigorous Common Milkweed plugs that I'd overlooked. And a small handful of Butterflyweed & Whorled Milkweed plugs, too :)

Worm Castings + Homemade Pest Repellents: our talented friend, Travis Andrews, is teaching a Garden School this Saturday to help you take your gardening to the next level. Scroll down for details.

Green Posole + Navajo Fry Bread: a very special treat! Tori Andrews is making traditional Navajo soup (both chicken and vegetarian versions) and Navajo Fry Bread, available for sale from 10 am to 1 pm. Sales support the educational work of Native Farming Solutions & the Indigenous Youth Empowerment Project. Buy a ticket for Garden School and get a FREE bowl of soup!

Pollinator Garden Teams:

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help with our pollinator garden teams! We ask for a commitment of 2 hours per month from each volunteer. Weโ€™ll provide training and assistance. Itโ€™s a great opportunity for hands-on learning about pollinator gardens alongside other pollinator enthusiasts! Message us if youโ€™re interested and weโ€™ll get back to you asap.

CommonWealth's Rain Garden and Woodland Garden:

These two pollinator garden teams still have room for a couple more volunteers. The Rain Garden is dual purpose; it captures run-off during a rainstorm, slowing it down and letting it absorb into the soil while also catching trash and filtering out toxins that would otherwise go straight into the storm sewer and into our local creeks. We are filling the Rain Garden with pollinator plants that can handle wet feet as well as drought; resilient plants that also feed birds, bees, butterflies and other tiny friends. The Rain Garden teams meets Thursday mornings at 9 am.

The Woodland Garden is a long curbstrip that runs along Olie from our โ€œSeedy Plotโ€ to โ€œOliviaโ€™s Garden". Half of it is shady, and weโ€™re taking our cue from the woodlands to fill it with plants like purple beautyberry, frostweed, blue mistflower and purple coneflower. The Woodland Garden team meets Thursday evenings at 8 pm. Message us if youโ€™re interested in helping with either garden!

Pollinator Garden Teams
Weโ€™ve had a tremendous response to our call for volunteers to help with the pollinator gardens at CommonWealth. Thank you! For those of you who are interested but still not sure where youโ€™d best fit in, Iโ€™m going to tell you more about several of the options over the coming week. We ask for a commitment of 2 hours per month from each volunteer. Weโ€™ll provide training and assistance. Itโ€™s a great opportunity for hands-on learning about pollinator gardens alongside other pollinator enthusiasts!

CommonWealth's Food Forest
Almost a decade ago, we began turning a small back yard into a diverse food forest. Our goal is to combine food production and pollinator habitat in a beautiful space that nurtures our souls. Weโ€™ve created circles with low-maintenance fruit trees in the centers and are gradually filling in each circle with pollinator plants, nitrogen-fixing plants, herbs, vegetables and other edible plants. The trees that we planted 9 years ago are now producing fruit (persimmons, figs, mulberries!) Weโ€™ve made lots of mistakes and we keep trying out new things and learning. Itโ€™s been a great pleasure to watch it grow to this stage, and with new people involved, weโ€™re excited to take it to the next level. Volunteers have the opportunity to be involved with planning and research as well as planting and maintenance.
The Food Forest team meets Saturday mornings starting at 8:30 am. If youโ€™d like to join the team, or learn more, message us and weโ€™ll get back to you asap.

Keystone Plants

The National Wildlife Federation had its biggest month ever in April for Certified Habitats! If you are in the process of transforming your yard from a landscape into habitat, here is a list of native plants available now that are classified as Keystone Plants and will provide the most value for the space, along with how many pollinator species they will support. Keystone plants are the most ecologically valuable native plants within a particular ecoregion. Just as a keystone supports an arch, these plants support entire food webs.
