Let me introduce you to the Tarantula Hawk. Spotting this absolutely stunning species of spider wasp becomes very easy this time of year as tarantula breeding season ramps up. How does this wasp get its name, you ask? Well, the wasp actively seeks out the spider. Once found, the wasp engages & stings the tarantula. Paralyzing it before dragging it back into the spiders hole. It's at that time that the wasp lays a single egg on the spider. After several days, the egg hatches and lives off the spider (while it still alive)for a couple of weeks before pupating, after which a new Tarantula Hawk emerges and starts the process all over again.

Feast your eyes on this spectacular little creature. The Ring-Neck snake 🐍This tiny very docile little reptile (thickness of a pencil and rarely exceeding 14in) is very secretive and is rarely seen in the wild. They spend most of their time in the dirt and under leaf litter. They're best known for their bright orange belly and the unique defensive posture of curling and flasing their tail. It's diet is also unique, as they prefer to dine on salamanders, slugs, and earthworms. These snakes are crepusculars, so searching near moist areas during dusk or dawn is helpful to spot this serpent.

Not only gorgeous 😍 , but the sweet fragrance they put out is magical✨️ These Woolly Bluecurls aren't too common on our trails, as they tend to follow fire/burn areas and need conditions to be just right for them to blossom. If you're fortunate enough to spot these when hiking Ojai, be sure to give them a sniff.

The Matilija Poppy!
It gets it name from the Chumash Indian "Chief Matilija" and his daughter, Amatil. As the story goes. Amatil was madly in love with a Chumash warrior, Cocopah, who sadly died in combat against the Spaniards. It's said that Amatil was so heartbroken that she, in turn, passed away on her fallen lover. What was left of the two was this beautiful flower. The white symbolizes the couples love, and the yellow center represents everlasting love.
This flower is growing all over Ojai right now. Just open your eyes next time you're hiking Ojai to spot this flower

Blue Dicks (giggle giggle). These are another edible plant found along Ojais trails. Loaded with carbs, these little plants were a staple food source for Native Americans, along with every other herbaceous loving animal.

Ojai's received over 44in since the start of 2023, that's over 200% of our normal rainfall to date.
Nothing brings more happiness than seeing our rivers and streams flowing the way they are now.

Miners Lettuce! And loads of it, everywhere right now! Eat it raw or cook it like spinach. This winter purslane is loaded with vitamin C, vitamin A, and iron. It gets it name from the Gold Rush Era when Miners would eat to stave off scurvy.
