⚠️ Please think twice before taking your dog hiking in the heat.

Sadly, I’ve treated dogs that suffered heat stroke while hiking, including two that collapsed on the switchbacks of Adams Canyon in Layton during the evening.
One did not survive, and the other was critically ill but thankfully recovered.

Even when it feels cooler to us, the combination of exercise, warm temperatures, and hot terrain can quickly become deadly for dogs.

If you plan to hike with your pet, please go only during the very early morning hours, bring plenty of water, take frequent breaks, and turn around at the first sign of excessive panting, weakness, or slowing down.

A beautiful hike isn’t worth risking your best friend’s life

**PUBLIC WARNING**
Foxtails & Grass Seeds: Tiny Seed, Big Problem

This tiny grass seed was removed from a cat's eye today after becoming lodged beneath the eyelid. While it may not look like much, these seeds can cause significant pain and, if left untreated, serious complications.

Foxtails and other grass seeds are barbed, meaning they only travel one direction—>forward. They can work their way into eyes, ears, noses, between the toes, and even through the skin, where they continue to migrate deeper into the body.

Keep an eye out for:
• Squinting or excessive tearing
• Pawing at the face or eyes
• Repeated sneezing
• Head shaking
• Excessive licking of a paw
• Swelling, draining tracts, or sudden limping

If your pet has been exploring fields, tall grass, or even your own backyard, take a moment to check them over when they come inside. Catching these seeds early can prevent a much more serious problem later.

Don't let their size fool you...foxtails and grass awns are one of the most common summertime hazards we see, and they have an uncanny ability to find just about any opening... and sometimes even make their own.

If you suspect your pet has encountered one, give us a call. Early treatment is almost always easier than treating the damage after the seed has migrated. 🐾🌾
