With the summer season it is very important to be aware of the signs of possible heat stroke in our pets. We also want our clients aware of how to prevent and what to do if you think your pet is experiencing heat stroke.

Some signs of a heat stroke would be:
-Elevated heart rate
-High body temperature
-Seizures
-Glassy eyes
-Collapsing/Staggering
-Heavy panting, excessive drool, red/purple gums or tongue, vomiting

How to avoid a heat stroke:
-Restricting exercise
-Ensure that water and a shaded area is always provided
-Walk your pet earlier in the moring or later in the afternoon
-Spray with cool water

What to do if you are worried about a possible heat stroke:
-Move your pet somewhere cool
-Offer a small amount of lukewarm water
-Contact your veterinarian or emergency clinic if it is after hours.

Summer brings lots of fun outdoor activities in our beautiful City. Hiking, biking, swimming and most of us bring our dogs along for the fun. Most of us are also familiar with some of the dangers being in our mountains can bring. But there is one danger most of you don't think about.... Grass ! yes... Grass or cheat grass and if your dog has ever had the dredded foxtail you know what we are talking about.. these little things are mean! So how do you keep them away from your dogs & cats. Be aware, try to avoid hiking in long grassy areas, keep long hair pets trimmed around paws & ears. Brush your pets regularly after hiking or playing in fields. Pay attention if your pet is chewing or pawing more attention to a paw or scratching at an ear. They will often form a blister or bump that will look like a sore.
