Failure isn’t always a bad thing. It’s information about your dog that can guide you toward success.
A lot of training focuses on preventing mistakes and keeping things so controlled that the dog never gets it wrong. The problem is that if a dog never fails, they never have the opportunity to work through a challenge and learn from it.
If all you’re doing is controlling your dog’s environment, you’re managing behavior rather than truly training. We want our dogs to think, to try, and sometimes to make mistakes. Those moments give them the opportunity to figure things out and develop a deeper understanding of what works and why.
Failure leads to problem solving. Problem solving leads to understanding.
We don’t fear failure. We use it.
A dog that learns through mistakes understands the consequences of their choices, not just how to follow directions. The goal is reliable behavior that holds up even when we’re not there to guide every decision.
