Fourth of July is quickly approaching. Some pets may have a mild, moderate, or even severe noise phobia surrounding this holiday. There are several remedies available to help your pet find relief.

More natural, home products include:
Adaptil collars or sprays (dogs) or Feliway sprays (cats): this is a synthetic "feel good" & comforting pheromone

Thunder shirts: give a swaddle/comfort feeling to them

Melatonin: helps humans and animals relax to sleep better (please call your veterinarian before administering)

Composure: is a natural dog supplement that they take orally

And, as always, conditioned training with positive reward.

Unfortunately, the severe phobia that most animals have to loud noises such as fireworks, thunder, etc., really need prescription oral medications. That's where your veterinarian plays a significant role in deciding what medication is best for your pet.

We take great pride in a fear-free approach to ALL cats that come through our door! It is of utmost importance to make sure each kitty is comfortable and relaxed before, during, and after their appointment with us.

How do we do it you ask?

1. We have a room specific to cats ONLY! It's warm and has a big window to occupy their attention.
2. We have plenty toys and lots of yummy treats to entice and reward them.
3. We use towels to cuddle so they don't feel so vulnerable.
4. We are educated and experienced! We know a scared cat vs a fractious cat. Most cats are just scared and really mean no harm. Rarely we see cats who more intense and need anti-anxiety medication to help ease their fear.
5. We are cool, calm, collected, and quick. Cats have "Kitty Minutes"- It's absolutely imperative to know when to stop and not push to the point of the visit then becoming a negative experience. We "listen" to them AND their owners.

It's crucial to have a good experience and build on that every visit!

All of us here at Wags & Whiskers wanted to share with everyone the fun and knowledgeable time we had in Sandestin, Florida at the Emerald Coast Veterinary Conference (ECVC). We spent the week of Memorial Day learning new and upcoming things in veterinary medicine that we are excited to implement to better serve our clients and their pets.

Dr. Ann attended classes and expanded her knowledge in neurology, soft tissue surgery, radiology, & feline medicine and dentistry.
Salina, Emily, and Rhea learned more about CPR, toxin ingestion, Lyme disease, diarrhea and senior dog care.

We lounged at the pool with some refreshments; strolled along the beach with beautiful waves and even more astonishing sunsets; but, most importantly, we bonded even more as a team through our love and dedication of veterinary medicine!
