And that’s why you go see a physical therapist. Someone to look at the entire kinetic chain, address all the issues, and do it all with observation and their hands.

It’s that time of year. We all know how the Fourth of July affects our pets causing fear, anxiety, and potentially a bolt from a house or yard. Plan ahead with medications, turn up the tv or music, using calming garments or supplements. But most importantly, let folks know how harmful fireworks are to lots of living beings including our veterans. Think of others before you set those fireworks off.

Here's the latest version of the ever-changing cast of dogs available for you to meet and adopt at Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control. Some can go home immediately, some still need to be spayed/neutered first, but you can commit to adopt the dog today. Adoption fees for all animals at AACCC are waived right now, but the shelter's usual adoption requirements still apply (www.aacounty.org/services-and-programs/adopt-a-pet).

If you do adopt a dog, we recommended paying $40 for a 4Dx test at the shelter that checks for heartworms and three tick-borne diseases. Should the dog be positive, the shelter will do the treatment at no cost to you (it can be quite expensive elsewhere). If the dog is negative, as most are, you can show the test results to your vet so the dog can be started on heartworm preventatives.

AACACC is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Saturday at 411 Maxwell Frye Rd., Millersville, MD. Hope to see you there!

This senior Pittie is recovering from an extracapsular cruciate repair from a local DVM and has hip dysplasia. Her human brought her to MASH to improve her strength and mobility. At our suggestion, they’ve added nutraceuticals, made changes to the home layout, added exercises- all for their sweet girl.

An easy way to traction the lumbar spine is to have the dog do it for you. Stabilizing the rear while they reach forward for treats will get the vertebral separation actively, and they don’t even realize they are working !
