Monday Mammal Fun Facts!
Ziggy wanted to wish everyone a great start to the week! He's one of our South American Coatimundi AKA The Ring Tail Coati.
They are a member of the raccoon and ringtail family. Typically found in tropical/sub tropical areas throughout South America but they can be found as far north as Arizona, new mexico and Texas!
They are omnivorous mostly feeding on a mix of protein (chicken, bugs, rats, lizards, eggs) as well as fruits/vegetables. They are normally the size of large house cats and are a high energy species known for constantly getting into trouble. Especially with the local farmers whos chicken they love to go after.
In the wild the females diurnal meaning they are awake during the day and sleep at night and are known to form large groups known as "bands" to keep everyone safe and raise the young. Males are nocturnal as a means of survival. The females of the bands only allow males to join when it's mating season once the season is over the females will kick the males out of the band and raise the young together. Males will then spend their nights awake searching for food and keeping safe from predators until morning when they return to trees to sleep.
The big distinctive differences between the Coatimundi and our native raccoon are Coati are typically longer and more slender than raccoon and have an articulating nose which they use to dig around in the ground and rotten trees for insects and worms. Because of the shape and they also have been dubbed the hog nose coon by locals.
Definitely not a "pet" for everyone but an absolute joy to work with if you have the time and patience. Cannot wait to have the shop open to offer encounters with them as well as other unique and excited animals!
Would love to do more of these introduction to the animals here at Vault 228 if yall enjoyed this!

First Vet Visit!
Took Ziggy and Zoey in for their general check up and to get them established with Dr Askew. (Hands down the best exotic vet on the coast!) They got a perfect clean bill of health and are growing great! Ziggy gave the techs a run for their money. He apparently ripped out of their arms and ran around the exam room and down the hallway playing chase. I told them he was a handful! π€·π€£ Zoey just screamed bloody murder lol both got back home and ate some grapes as a treat for being such good coatis!
Shes so sweet πππ
