Talk About It Tuesday

From Kayla Short, Hernando, FL, "I instruct and prepare riders from a variety of disciplines. Their horses, mainly quarter horses and paints, range in suitability from ranch to hunt seat types. In preparing to show Western Dressage, I tell my riders that there is no set standard attire. They can show in the tack and clothing they already own and know fits their unique styles. Each pair love to showcase their fashion sense in the Western Dressage arena. Our ranch riders break out their button up oxfords, wild rags, and c***k chaps while our horsemanship riders trot down center line in day shirts with tasteful bling and silver saddles.

I love when I see a well turned-out horse and rider presenting an over-all look that fits their horse’s type, movement, and way of going. Personally, I go for an outfit that is elegant and timeless; all black day shirt, chaps, cowboy hat with a pop of color tied around my neck. If you’re excited to expand your closet, you are encouraged to be creative. Pull inspiration from other events like Working Equitation or other time periods like early 1900s and the wild west. Western Dressage is easy and accessible for everyone. I love that my riders don’t have to break the bank or buy anything new to be confident in the arena."

We’re finally home from our first APHA World Championship Show, and our hearts are incredibly full.

Eighteen days. 2,104 miles. Roughly 43 hours on the road. Four amazing horses. Five dedicated exhibitors. More junk food than we’d like to admit, and far too little sleep. Every long mile, every dark early morning, every dark late night was worth it.

We traveled to Fort Worth with big dreams—to ride our best, showcase the countless hours of work that happened long before we ever entered the arena, and see how we measured up against some of the best horse-and-rider teams in the country. We showed deliberately and took initiative to ensure we were prepared for every class entered. Along the way came moments of celebration, moments of disappointment, happy tears, frustrated tears, and the kind of nerves that remind you just how much you care.

Horse showing has never been just about placings. It’s about believing in each other, maintaining poise through winning and defeat, celebrating your teammates and competition, learning magnanimity, trusting the process, integrating knowledge, developing autonomy, persevering through adversity, and growing into a compassionate horse person. This trip gave us all of that and so much more.

Most of all, we’re grateful for our incredibly special horses. They gave us everything they had, every single time we asked. They trusted our proprioception, tried their hearts out, and constantly reminded us why this journey is so special. We are endlessly thankful for these incredible partners and all they give us. Now it’s their turn to enjoy some well-earned rest while we reflect on the show.

Thank you to everyone who cheered us on from home, celebrated our victories, and shared this unforgettable journey with us. Our first World Show is one we’ll never forget, and we leave with hearts full of gratitude.
