How often should my horse have a session?
It depends on the horse's age, history, goals, work load and soundness issues!
** If a horse is older and has been working hard, once a week is ideal to scan so we can see an alert to any baseline changes before they become an issue. Using MagnaWave PEMFand manually softening areas of knots, tension and restrictions keeps their bodies happy. It also eliminates the chain reaction of tension that spreads in patterns until they are tight and protective with less freedom of movement in their gaits. That's when their weakest point comes to head and pain shows.
**If the horse is a 7 yr old, showing no signs of pain, scans nicely and manually feels only normal working tightness, then every few weeks works nicely to moniter them and keep their bodies happy. When workload is increased, or hirse shows increase during the season, we may prefer every other week.
** Youngsters being started may surprise you! Developing muscles and ongoing growth spurts, also bring balance challenges for them. They are butt high , then even, then super butt high and growing broader, then even out...so on and so forth. For this reason sessions fairly often are beneficial. With each change they travel differently. If butt high they are heavier up front, which may fatigue thoracic sling muscles. Riders may try to get them to sit back, which in reality often only gets them to hollow their back creating tension in the lumbar and the hind end trails out behind them. Then as their height evens out they compensate and use different muscle patterns. Development is often not even on both sides which over time the tight muscles on one side overdevelop as they have not been consistently softened and released by bodywork. A lifetime of battling onesidedness may possibly be prevented if a youngster had regular work on his body as he grew and developed.
**What is better, a session before a show or after a show?
Before a show will allow them to feel good, have freedom of motion and often anxious horses relax and focus better. But know your horse, some horses perform best if session is the morning of the show, some the day/evening before and the few that prefer a complete day in between.
**Sessions on a horse after show weekend is ALWAYS a positive. The recovery session prevents muscle soreness or fatigue setting in which PEMF is known and amazing for preventing. Microtears in soft tissue which all athletes experience receive a boost in fast repair. Inflammation is less likely to set in as circulation and cellular repair is active from the session.
**Acute injuries are best tended to with PEMF as often as possible, as healing time is known by research to be shortened. Bone fractures heal faster and the fibroblasts in a cleaner strong pattern (FDA approved, so truth). A stitched injury may have to have stitches pulled quicker than normal as healing time with be faster. Bodywork along with PEMF helps relieve the compensatory tightness in areas opposite or diagonal to the injured area.
**Chronic pain. Know that anything that took years to get there, such as arthritis, is not a one and done session. Ex: If a horse has a chronic SI issue, I am going to see a pattern which the opposite TFL, glutes and possibly stifle will be overworked and reactive. Tightness will also be in the opposite lumbar, back and up to the shoulder. Over time the tension in that pattern becomes extreme, now the base of neck and thoracic sling brace to compensate. The best way to get control of it is to do sessions a few days apart for 3 to 4 times, breaking the cycle and unwinding the tension. Then the main area of chronic issue is clear and apparent. If possible we can maintain it with more spread out sessions. Or if needed, the vet uses the appropriate method (inject, shockwave, etc) in that area and we maintain the body from there, most times prolonging the horses successful careers by years.
Long post but horses are complex, you dont want a practitioner that has no background unable to give examples and reference from a history of success in keeping bodies happy. Those who know me know I will never suggest more sessions than what the horse needs. And we will tweek it to find that sweet spot. I am busy enough I do not need to do that, my heart is simply doing right by the horse, keeping their bodies feeling good, which keeps their attitude and willing to try on point ❤️
Hope this helps to answer, feel free to run your scenario by me and let's scan your horse to see what we find!
