An important quote from a recent podcast I was invited on.

In order to reorganise and restore function we have to take a different path and sometimes that means groundwork only for a time.

There’s a quiet grief many animal people carry when they begin seeing things differently.

Because once you realize how much of traditional animal handling was built around suppression instead of understanding…
you can’t fully unsee it.

You notice how often animals are praised for tolerating discomfort.
How often fear gets labeled as “respect.”
How often shutdown gets mistaken for calmness.

And for a while, it can feel heartbreaking.

But then something beautiful starts happening too.

You begin noticing the tiny signs of aliveness returning.

The horse who starts expressing opinions again.
The dog who becomes playful after years of hypervigilance.
The animal who finally realizes:
“I don’t have to disappear to be safe here.”

That moment changes both lives.

Because animals were never meant to be emotional machines built for human convenience.

They are nations unto themselves.
Full beings.
With inner worlds as rich and meaningful as our own.

And when we stop trying to dominate those worlds…
we get invited into them.

When a horse lets go of physical tension, its mind relaxes as well.

During my demonstration, this lovely mare suddenly plopped down and entered a deep REM sleep, intermittently dozing for nearly half an hour, despite the numerous humans and other horses around her.

Every horse deserves to feel comfortable and at ease in their bodies.

Horses face a multitude of challenges, and riders often sense and witness the effects of undue tension. The "issue is in the tissue"!

Bodywork is essential for horses; it's not merely a luxury. Their muscles won’t improve simply with rest!

Thank you to Mystique Integrated Equine Bodywork for capturing this lovely video!

COMMON MISTAKE! Not so much in hand, but when people ride Renvers, they SO OFTEN turn it into just counter bend with both ends out.
That is A exercise, but it’s not Renvers, and doesn’t have the same magic sprinkles as Renvers
Really focus on keeping the chest of the horse pointed on your circle, and not away from it. And keep it S L O W…… the hindquarters must perform a much larger circle than the shoulders so you have to keep the shoulders super slow. And this is where the magic really lives because slowing down the front legs and increasing the swing time of the hind legs, is what creates the diagonalization effect!!
Horses will diagonalize in giravolta as well, but it does not have the same collection effect because they can just fall through the outside shoulder to quickly and easily catch their balance. It’s when you change the bend into renvers that it really has a true collection effect!
