Famed Thoroughbred John Henry and his life-long groom say goodbye.

November 18, 1986

"Just before John Henry was led off the airplane that flew him to Lexington, he and his life-long groom and constant companion, groom Jose Mercado, shared a final moment together before Mercado wiped tears from his eyes as he said "good bye my friend."
He then led John Henry from the jet to a waiting truck that took the famed race horse to The Kentucky Horse Park where he stood in retirement. His groom stayed on the plane and returned to California.
This was one of the most amazing moments I witnessed in my long career between an animal and a human. Both appeared to be weeping and I'm sure John Henry knew what was happening." -Stewart Bowman
