Today we tried something new and entered our local 4H open show. It’s been about 23 years since I did western pleasure and halter. And let me tell you, I hated it then 🤣 but I have grown up and learned to appreciate things like this now that I have children of my own.
My daughter got bucked off last fall and hasn’t wanted to ride much since. So to encourage her to ride and hopefully join 4H this year I decided to step out of my comfort zone. So we entered the show together.
Proud to announce that my crazy barrel horse (and I use that term because I hear it so often) won the adult pleasure class, adult horsemanship, and adult trail class. We placed second in showmanship and our speed events we placed second in as well. We ended the day as reserve champion for the open all around title.
My daughter ended up 4th in the open youth points for the day and had an outstanding showing. She has only ever done barrels. Needless to say these might become our new adventure for awhile.
Panamas First Jewel was a rockstar today. Maybe this is her calling in life! 🤣
But with all of this being said. Please stop the “crazy barrel horse” stereotyping. It’s frustrating to those of us that have spent a lot of time having a horse that can do good in all areas. It’s always been my goal to have a horse inside and outside of the arena. One that can go make a nice competitive run and walk out and let my children ride them. And ultimately when I ride a client horse this is the same goal I have for them as well.
