Tucker got his doggie braces on last week! His lower canine tooth is in the wrong spot, which is causing trauma to the roof of his mouth. We applied a chain that will be adjusted weekly, and also an upper bite plane to help guide the tooth into the correct position.

What happens if a puppy’s baby teeth are still present when the permanent teeth begin to erupt?

Persistent baby teeth often cause trauma to the soft tissues of the mouth & will cause periodontal disease to the surrounding teeth due to crowding. A persistent baby tooth should be removed as soon as the crown of the permanent tooth is visible above the gingival margin to avoid these issues.

Antlers, bones, nylon chews, or any toy that does not bend or readily dissolve should not be given to a dog to chew on. Fortunately, there are other safe chews that dogs enjoy and have the added effect of decreasing plaque and tartar accumulation.

If you have been giving your dog antlers, bones, or nylon chews and are concerned that one of the back teeth may have broken, it is best to have him or her examined. If the teeth are broken, they often can be saved with a root canal treatment. However, if the infection has progressed too far, the teeth may have to be removed. Contact us at 9014669224 if you have any concerns about your dog’s dental care.
