What are the alternatives to Apoquel for dogs?

Watching your dog scratch even while they’re on Apoquel is frustrating, and so is finding out it might not be the right fit for them. The good news is there are several other options to talk through with your vet.

Some work fast, and some are built for the long haul. Cytopoint is a shot your vet gives every 4 to 8 weeks, and it usually starts working within a day. Zenrelia and Numelvi are daily pills in the same family as Apoquel. Atopica starts out as a daily capsule and takes 4 to 8 weeks to reach full effect. Steroids act quickly but are meant for short stretches, and allergy shots or drops can take 6 to 12 months to help, though they go after the allergy itself.

Before making a switch, your vet will often check for things like fleas, mites, or a skin or ear infection. Those can make itching worse, and sorting them out may even get Apoquel working again. If you do change medications, Apoquel doesn’t need a taper, but it’s worth planning the switch with your vet so the itch doesn’t flare up in between.

Galliprant vs. Gabapentin for dogs: which is right for your pup?

If your vet has brought up Galliprant or gabapentin for your dog’s pain, you might be wondering how the two are different.

They treat different kinds of pain. Galliprant is an NSAID that reduces inflammation and osteoarthritis pain, and it’s given once a day as a chewable tablet. Gabapentin calms nerve-related pain and can also help with seizures or anxiety, and it’s usually given two to three times a day.

Because of that, plenty of dogs take both together as part of a plan from their vet. There are no known drug interactions between them, and in Dutch Vet’s data, vets prescribed both together for about 3.6% of joint and mobility consultations over the past year. Gabapentin on its own isn’t well supported by research for treating pain in dogs, so vets usually add it to a pain plan instead of using it alone.

What vaccines do puppies need? Puppy shot schedule by age

A new puppy comes with a vaccine card full of acronyms and dates.

Here is the short answer from Dutch Vet: puppies need core vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and rabies.

The typical schedule:
6 to 8 weeks: first dose of the combination vaccine (often written DHPP) for distemper, adenovirus, and parvovirus
10 to 12 weeks: second combination dose
12 weeks or older: first leptospirosis dose, then a second dose 2 to 4 weeks later
14 to 16 weeks: final combination dose, plus rabies per state law

Depending on where your puppy lives and plays, a vet may also add Bordetella, Lyme, or canine flu vaccines. Until your vet confirms the series is complete, skip dog parks and busy public spots, since parvo can survive in soil and on surfaces for a long time.
