Few decisions in riding are more difficult than deciding it’s time to move on from a horse.
The partnership between horse and rider is built on time, trust, and shared experience. Letting go of that relationship, especially when it has been a positive one, can feel personal and emotional. But according to top hunter rider and trainer Geoff Teall, there comes a point when staying with the wrong horse is not just limiting… it can be unfair.
Recognizing when you have outgrown your horse is a critical step in both rider development and good horsemanship.
No matter how talented or willing a horse may be, every horse has limits to what it can comfortably and successfully do. Teall makes it clear that riders must be honest about what their horse is capable of doing. A horse that excels at one level may not have the ability to succeed at the next. “A horse that works well over 3’ may not have the same brilliance if asked to compete at the 3’6” level,” he shares.
This is not a failure of the horse. It is simply a reality of ability, conformation, and natural talent. The challenge for riders is recognizing that limit and respecting it.
