Starting c**ts is one of my favorite parts of training, because it’s the beginning of everything that horse will carry with them for the rest of their life. The foundation we lay in those early stages shapes not only their ability to perform, but also their mindset, willingness, and confidence.
When we take our time, make sure the basics are truly understood, and allow the horse to grow at their own pace, we’re setting them up for long-term success. A horse with a solid foundation is more willing to try, recovers faster from challenges, and can move into new stages of training with confidence.
Something people don’t often talk about is how long this process actually takes. Building a solid foundation isn’t something that happens in just a few months. It takes consistency, repetition, and a steady approach before things really start to “stick.” Unfortunately, many horses are pulled from training right at the point where the foundation is just beginning to solidify. Cutting the process short not only robs the horse of true understanding, but often leads to setbacks or holes that have to be addressed later.
On the other hand, giving a c**t the time they need allows us to create confidence, willingness, and clarity. Instead of reverting or resisting, they move forward with a strong base that will carry them throughout the rest of their training and life.
For me, the goal isn’t just to get a c**t “going.” It’s to build a willing, confident partner who understands their job and enjoys learning. That’s why I believe patience, consistency, and a focus on foundation are the most important tools we can use.
After all, a solid start sets the stage for a lifetime of success—for both horse and rider.
