The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) was established in 1980 by a group of veterinarians who wanted to provide their clients with quality veterinary care during non-business hours. Animal Emergency & Referral Center started out with one clinic, one veterinarian, and one technician! Over the years, our hospitals have grown, and we highly value the relationships we’ve built wit

h local veterinarians, pets and owners in the many communities we serve. Today, we employ a wide variety of doctors and health care team members – all specially trained in emergency and critical care--in addition to a growing referral practice for when your pet just isn't feeling like himself. Though we are an emergency practice and will never forget our roots, we are forging a future as the premier referral center in Minnesota. Critical Care, Internal Medicine (including our I-131 Treatment Facility for Hyperthyroid Cats,) Surgery & Rehab, Cardiology, Cancer Care, Dentistry & Oral Surgery, Dermatology, Neurology and Radiology are just some of the services your pets can receive when needed.

This is 7-month-old Pearl! She came in through AERC's ER for a fever, reluctance to play, and spinal pain. Pearl transferred to the Neurology team and was diagnosed with steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA). After a night in the hospital to make sure she was comfortable and non-febrile, she went home feeling MUCH better. She is doing great on her steriod regimen and pain medications and will be monitored by the neurology team over the next several months while undergoing treatment! Good job, Pearl and Neuro!

🩺 Wisdom Wednesday
Did you know?

Pets hide pain. By the time many pets (especially exotic animals) show signs of discomfort, they've been compensating for a while.
Signs can be subtle:
- Sleeping more than usual
- Hesitating before jumping
- Changes in appetite
- Less interest in play
If something feels "off," trust your instincts and contact your family vet. You know your pet best!

Our St. Paul facility was one of many businesses and homes that lost power in last night's powerful storm. As a result, our hospital at 1542 W 7th Street is temporarily closed. Our Oakdale hospital remains open to serve you and your pets!

If your pet could choose their anesthesia team, they’d choose the one that:
-plans ahead for their comfort
-manages pain before it starts
- and stays with them from start to recovery.

At AERC, that’s exactly what we do.
Because when pets can’t speak for themselves, we’re listening for them. 🐾

Happy ! We hope you enjoy a donut snack today; many donut shops are offering this sweet treat for free to celebrate! But remember not to share with your animal friends! The high fat and sugar content in donuts can cause GI upset or even pancreatitis, a serious illness that we see often in our ER.
