The Following is a letter Bente wrote.
For me, the best part of this sport is when you meet people who respect and care for the animals and humans they work with, people who make things better than they were before. Honesty, integrity, kindness, care, sportsmanship and hard work, those qualities elevate a person to a level few truly attain.
Billy is one of those people.
There are many who have not met Billy which is why those of us on the west coast are reaching out. We know him as the person we go to in hard times, who we lean on for kindness and words of wisdom when we, or our animals, are in crisis, who listens and helps heal.
I am being way too verbose, but when I crash and burn at Nationals I call crying and Billy props me up, puts me back on my feet. When my dog had torsion, he sprang into action with support both emotionally and factually, getting his vet friend, Dr Lee Koch, to call me and explain what to ask and look for when she was having emergency surgery. When I am feeling frustrated about mechanics or personal issues at a trial, he shares his decades long experiences and makes me see things I otherwise would have missed and makes me a better help at a trial. He is instrumental in keeping the work force on the west coast going to keep the Nationals going out here. We don't fight on for intangibles, we fight on for people like Billy, because of the respect and love we have for him, we cannot, will not, disappoint.
His big heart deserves recognition. His integrity, knowledge, and hard work may be more widely known but he is one of those people who make a difference in people's lives and elevates this sport to some thing beautiful!

Billy in Mississippi ! He finished FC Lilly owned by Kippy Swingle and FC AFC Kylie owned by Sonya Harrigfeld . Lilly had 130 open points , 2 time national finalist , qualified 9 nationals !

From Tammy Zahornacky. I was sitting and thinking about the years I have trained with Billy. We had the odd retriever amongst the sea of black Labradors. But Billy was not a stranger when it came to Goldens. A few of the greats come to mind: FC Vinny, FC Bro, AFC Kirby, FC Lulu, and FC AFC Jester. He just has a knack for each individual dog. The ability to read the dog and know just what to do to help the dog learn. With his help and teaching, we put an FC AFC title on Lacy and and AFC title on Amber. Both girls qualified for the National Amateur Retriever Championship.

I can’t find the words to explain the amount of patience he had teaching me (never owned or trained) how to train my dogs. I know I was a hard student but he was able to convey exactly what I needed to know. He never gave up on me as long as I tried.
