Snapping turtles lay clutches of 20-100+ eggs starting in May in our area. This tends to be one of the only times they venture on land, and can often be seen crossing roadways near ponds and small lakes. If you stop to help a turtle cross the road be sure to move them across the road in the direction they are headed. Remember that many snapping turtles are large and powerful and can easily bite off a finger! If you decide to help a turtle, please be sure you can do so safely, and watch the following video from The Toronto Zoo for some great tips!

When Ginny the African Grey came in to the clinic last week, this radiograph helped Dr. Pinello and Dr. Dutton quickly determine that she was “egg bound” and needed immediate intervention. There are a multitude of reasons that egg binding can occur, but in Ginny’s case, the egg she was trying to lay was too large to pass. In order to save her life a needle was inserted through the vent into the egg to draw out the fluid and collapse the egg. With the help of some flexible rubber tubing, lubricant was inserted behind the egg into the oviduct and the egg was very gently removed using forceps. Ginny was sent home with her attentive owners and continued to improve, making a full recovery 🤍
