Occasionally you may see a post stating that we have reached our limit temporarily - This means that we are currently housing 12 rescue dogs. This is our personal limit, the number we can comfortably care for, feed and keep groomed without stretching ourselves too thin. However, we will make exceptions for true emergencies such as an injured or abuse cases which are usually referred to us by the

local or State Police. Since we refuse to put elderly, handicapped, puppy mill dogs, or abused dogs on a concrete floor, in individual fenced runs. We believe that it is better to make the worst case dogs feel like they really are home, than to take in many dogs only to have them put in a kennel run, isolated and in most cases, in the same situation they were rescued from. Our operating budget usually consists of what ever is left of our personal income after the bills are paid. We attend several craft shows and other fundraisers a year, all of which directly benefit the dogs at Safehaven. At no time do we use donated funds to pay the bills, or for "administrative fees" as other rescues and shelters do. Your donations go to buy the best dog food we can afford, new toys, treats, flea products, heartworm preventative medications, occasionally beds, and snuggle blankets and sweaters for the elderly dogs for winter. You can be assured, that your donation is NOT going into someone's pocket (unless maybe Petsmart's) We receive no state or federal funding for our rescue work. Monetary donations to help cover their expenses can be sent through Paypal at [email protected] or mailed directly to 162 Saxton Avenue, Norway SC 29113. I always try to give the kids something new. Something to enrich their lives. We usually have bobbing for hot dogs on Calvin's birthday and everyone loves that. But with the heat index around 100 degrees, I didnt feel it safe to have all these old dogs out in the yard for any length of time. So I made Doggie Safe Pizza instead. Ground turkey cooked well, with a little plain tomato sauce added, and some part skim mozzarella cheese on a tortilla. Let me tell you, that was a hit with most of them. There were a few dogs that didnt want it and thats fine, personal choice. But most really enjoyed their special treat.

Today we celebrate our mascot Calvin's 14th Birthday! Born with a heart defect, then rescued from a puppy mill, he wasnt supposed to live much past his first Birthday but here he is. Finally retiring from events this year. Calvin has been a steadfast helper at Safehaven. Welcoming new dogs and putting them at ease, always being the best boy. Over the past few years, he has had some health challenges, first developing ITP which is an auto immune disorder of the blood. Then on to a serious infection from a bug bite, eventually developing diabetes and blindness. But he is still the shining light at Safehaven. Happy 14th my little man

This makes me so happy. This is what Independence looks like for a little blind and deaf dog. The ability to go out and explore without relying on a human. Manny loves the ramp and the freedom it offers him

Very early this morning, before it got scorching hot, my handyman and I did a thing. We installed an aluminum ramp, donated by a very generous supporter for the littles. Many cant see well enough or are just too small to go down the steps without falling so I have been carrying them outside. Now they have more independence and a safe way to get in the yard and back to the house by themselves. With it being aluminum, it will outlast anything we could have built from wood. Its sturdy up to 600 pounds. Its probably the best improvement made for the littles' wellbeing. None of this would have been possible without our awesome supporters

This guy, right here, is a trouble maker! Let me tell you what he did to me yesterday.

Tito wanted outside. Okay. I let him in the fenced back yard but it was so hot. I didn't want him to stay out long. So I went into the kitchen but left the door open so I could keep an ear out for him. A few minutes go by and nothing, so I go out to get him. No Tito. Nowhere in the yard or on the porch. Just gone.

I come back inside and double check all of his favorite hiding spots. Nothing. I let the other dogs out hoping they would let me know if he was hiding out there. Nope. So I grab my van keys and ride around the block, hanging my head out the window, yelling his name in 95 degrees. No sign of him. By then I was sick to my stomach.

I open the door and come back inside only to see Tito on the back of the couch looking at me like "where did you go mama?"

All I can figure is he snuck back in on my heels and I didn't see him. Relieved that he wasn't cooked outside somewhere but now I get to figure out where his new hiding place is.

After speaking to the board of directors last night, it was unanimously decided that "Daisy" the very large senior lab be officially a Safehaven dog. There was some concern since she is definitely NOT a small breed, but she is very senior and needed a soft place to land. Her vet care will now be covered by Safehaven and I will be adding her and Manny to the sponsor a senior list.

Meemaw has congestive heart failure. On humid days like today, she has difficulties. I do give her an extra lasix which seems to help some, but she still isnt 100% On days like this, she likes to hang out and rest next to my computer desk.
Well, today, Louie thought she needed extra lovin' so he climbed in bed with her and snuggled her while she rested.
The bond shared by the Safehaven dogs is visible. When one isnt feeling the best, others make sure they arent alone and have company. They look out for each other. Age or size doesnt matter when you need a friend. Thankfully they have many friends here.

Hey everyone! Meet Manny!

Manny is an owner surrender, around 12 years old, vision impaired, deaf, collapsing trachea and the sweetest little old man there is (other than Calvin) I picked him up this afternoon and he is already settled in nicely. He gets along with everyone!
You may be wondering why he isnt quarantined. Well, Manny is up to date on all his vaccinations and has been most of his life, he wasnt around any other dogs recently and came from a single dog household. So there is little chance of him bringing anything contagious into Safehaven.
He is already making little and big friends. I think he will adjust very quickly. Welcome to Safehaven Manny!

Well folks, I know I said a while ago that I wouldnt be taking on any new dogs. Then came the lab, but that wasnt by choice! However, I was contacted by an owner that because of her own medical issues, needs to surrender a 12 year old, deaf Silky Terrier. After speaking to her over a few days, I have decided that there is room for one more.

Sometime this week, the little old man will make his way here. I'll do proper introductions then.

Its been 10 days since I found the old Yellow Lab on the road. So far no one has answered any of the posters or commented on the posts in groups trying to locate her owner.

As of last night, she is out of quarantine and has made herself right at home. Its hard to believe no one is looking for her. She is house trained, excellent with the other dogs, even the little ones, and even let Erik the disabled cat crawl all over her.

She will be going to the vet on the 26th for a rabies shot and heartworm test. I would almost put money on the fact that she will be positive. If so, we will be doing the slow kill method of treatment. The vet believes she is at least 10 years old.

She is moving around much better since being on a joint supplement and getting laser treatments for her old joints. Its so hard to believe that no one is missing this sweet old girl.

Our Story

Safehaven is not a kennel. The rescues live with us in our home. We do not have “open” hours. All visitation is by appointment only.

We DO NOT SHIP dogs. All dogs being adopted must be picked up by the person adopting them. We DO NOT allow dogs to be adopted as gifts for someone other than the adopter. Occasionally you may see a post stating that we have reached our limit temporarily - This means that we are currently housing 16 rescue dogs. This is our personal limit, the number we can comfortably care for, feed and keep groomed without stretching ourselves too thin. However, we will make exceptions for true emergencies such as an injured or abuse cases which are usually referred to us by the local or State Police. Since we refuse to put elderly, handicapped, puppy mill dogs, or abused dogs on a concrete floor, in individual fenced runs, we can only house 25 dogs per year. We believe that it is better to make the worst case dogs feel like they really are home, than to take in many dogs only to have them put in a kennel run, isolated and in most cases, in the same situation they were rescued from. We are inspected twice a year by the State Dog Warden for our kennel license. Our operating budget usually consists of what ever is left of our personal income after the bills are paid. We attend several craft shows and other fundraisers a year, all of which directly benefit the dogs at Safehaven.
