This week is , and we wanted to give you some tips and tricks to practice dog safety. It is important to remember that all dogs are capable of biting, even if they are usually friendly. Dogs can bite for a variety of reasons from not wanting their favorite toy taken to being in pain from an injury to being hugged too tightly. Paying attention to a dog's body language can tell you a lot about how they are feeling at any moment. A dog staring you down or hiding in a corner, is probably not a dog that wants to be approached. Children are often victims of dog bites because they don't know what to look out for which is why it's so important for parents to go over dog safety rules. On the other side, it is important that pet parents socialize their pets and watch out for any behavioral red flags. If you or something you know does get bit by a dog, immediately seek out medical care as dog bite wounds can hold a lot of bacteria. Dogs are amazing but just like any other animal, there are ways to stay safe and keep everyone involved happy and healthy.

April 4th was World Stray Animal Day and we wanted to highlight some positive statistics from Shelter Animal Count, a program of the ASPCA. It is important to note when talking about stray animals that there are some safety factors to consider. Stray animals can be very unpredictable, especially if they are ill or in pain. If you feel comfortable, you can approach slowly and even try to lure them in your car. If not, you can always call your local animal control or non-emergency police line for assistance. While not all stray animals have homes, some do so you can go to most veterinarian offices and they will scan for a microchip at no cost to you. If you are comfortable helping stray animals, some supplies to have are cat carriers, dog collars, a slip lead, blankets, water bowls and water, strong smelling foods safe for animals, like tuna, and an animal first aid kit. Always make sure you understand state and local laws regarding ownership of stray or lost animals.

- April is and we want to share helpful information for pet owners. Just like humans, animals can become injured or ill for a number of reasons. It is important that you know the first steps when something happens to your pet. As the image reads, be mindful not to put your face near an animal’s mouth that may be in pain. Even if usually sweet, an animal in distress can react poorly. This is why a veterinarian may muzzle an injured pet.
- Some types of injuries can be fractures, external wounds, and internal bleeding. Fractures will require a veterinary visit while some external wounds can be handled at home. Internal bleeding requires immediate intervention from a veterinarian.
- As we talked about last month, toxin exposure is very common, so it is important to keep the various pet poison hotlines’ phone numbers on hand. You can reach The Pet Poison Hotline at (800) 213-6680 and ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s hotline at (888) 426-4435.
- Seizures can happen in pets just like they happen in humans. It is important that you time the seizure and then reach out to your veterinarian or an emergency hospital for further assistance.
- A pet choking or not breathing is a very urgent situation. If your pet is choking but can breathe, you can rush them to your nearest emergency hospital. If you feel comfortable, you can also open your pet’s mouth and try to see if the object would be reachable with tweezers or your fingers. If your pet is not breathing, you can perform rescue breathing and should go to the emergency hospital.

Today, we are talking about household products as pet toxins for . According to the ASPCA, in 2025, rodenticides accounted for 6.5% of all exposures, insecticides accounted for 3.8%, and all other household products accounted for 6.4%. Things we use daily such as cleaners or paints may not be something a human would consume, but pets don’t know how dangerous these are to them. It is important that you don’t leave mop buckets with cleaner or paint cans out where pets can get to them. Even leaving a pet alone with these things for a minute can cause harm. For example, bleach can cause both external and internal damage from skin lesions to irritation of the gastrointestinal tract. It is also important to note that most rodenticide and pesticide ingestions are treated as medical emergencies. If you believe your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t, be sure to call the Pet Poison Hotline at (800) 213-6680 or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

Today, we are going over plants as toxins for . According to the ASPCA, plants made up 7.5% of all exposures in 2025. Different plants can have varying levels of side effects on your pet. For example, Sago Palms can be extremely dangerous for cats and dogs while Ponytail Palms are considered non-toxic. Some plants such as lilies are pretty but can cause extreme symptoms such as kidney failure and vomiting. Other plants such as ma*****na plants can cause temporary incoordination, incontinence, and even dilated pupils. It is important to keep plants out of your pet’s reach unless you are certain the plant is safe. If you believe your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t, be sure to call the Pet Poison Hotline at (800) 213-6680 or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

This week is and we will be highlighting common types of toxins to keep away from your furry friends. According to the ASPCA, in 2025, OTC medications, vitamins, and supplements made up 16.9% of all toxin exposures. Human food and drinks made up 16.4% of all exposures and chocolate itself made up 13.6%. Foods such as grapes, protein bars, onions, xylitol gums, and some spices can cause a wide range of symptoms. It is easy to forget about the aspirin in your backpack or the garlic on the counter, but they both can be very dangerous to your pet. It is important to keep toxins locked away or out of reach for pets, just like you would do for a small child. If you believe your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t, be sure to call the Pet Poison Hotline at (800) 213-6680 or ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.
