Eder Showpigs

Eder Showpigs Doing what it takes. Making our best better. Sharing what we learn. Coming soon: "The Quad Squad" Welcome to Eder Showpigs.

We are a small operation in Nortonville, KS that believes that making the best better isn't just a motto-it is a way of life. Our breeding program is centered on females that are geared for the production of wide based, sound-structured show prospects that offer the look the winners circle demands. We have dark and light crossbred prospects available every spring and fall.

Weigh your late July county fair pigs this week. If they are less than 150 lbs— Houston, we have a problem.
But also, Houston, we might have time to fix it.
Act NOW.

Watching OYE 2026, it felt impossible not to notice the influence of sires like Relentless, Mainline, and Dog Eat Dog behind many of the standout gilts in the ring.

That only added to our anticipation of the Premium Blend Genetics Dog Eat Dog pairing with our cornerstone matriarch.

“Tina” — our Fastlane x Never Before x Best Man female raised by Coulson Showpigs and purchased in the Night of Stars sale after her 30th Overall Commercial Gilt finish at OYE 2024 — continues to prove why elite sow power from gilts that can compete in the ring still matters.

Congratulations to Kate Heikes and Heikes Girls Show Team on a strong weekend at the
📍Cornhusker Classic — Wahoo, Nebraska

Day 1
🥉 3rd Dark Cross Gilt
⭐️ 5th Overall Breeding Gilt

Day 2
🥈 Reserve Dark Cross Gilt
🥉 3rd Overall Breeding Gilt

This was this gilt’s first major outing, and one that means a lot to our program. She patterns the mold we hoped for when we lined up her mother in August.

She reads like the kind you build around.

Tina currently carries a set of Relentless babies due mid-July — and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

🔥 That’ll do Tina. That will do.

Mountain Time Showdown

Wallace County holds a special place in our family story.

Long before Eder Showpigs existed as it does today, Sharon Springs and the Wallace County Fairgrounds were where all four Eder kids walked into the ring for their final county fair shows. A lot of laughs, lessons, tears, memories, friendships, wins, losses, and life moments were built in those barns.

That is why supporting the swine show at the inaugural Mountain Time Showdown means so much to us.

We are honored to serve as the Swine Show Sponsor and to reinvest into the same community that invested so much into our family over the years.

Good stock shows do more than hand out banners. They build confidence, work ethic, resilience, friendships, and passion for agriculture. Rural communities willing to create opportunities for young exhibitors deserve support.

We are proud to play a small role in helping this event get started and hope families from all over the region come support it.

Mark your calendars for June 13th & 14th at the Wallace County Fairgrounds.
Entries open May 1st on the Showman App.

Come make your best better in Sharon Springs, KS.

Feeds are flooded with the latest wins.

It’s easy to feel pressure to peak right now.
We all want curb appeal.

But not every champion is built for spring.
Some goals are bigger than May.

Stay true to the plan.
Goals matter.
Effort matters.
Consistency matters most when the banners aren’t coming yet.

The best ones are built at home—one lap, one feeding, one day at a time.

Do the yard work.

Feedback is a critical component of keeping your project on track—and the high-quality cameras we have on our phones create a tremendous opportunity for sharing your project’s progress.

But one of the biggest separators between those who improve…
…and those who become frustrated with poor feedback…

is the quality of information they provide when asking for help.

If you want meaningful feedback on a pig—
whether from a breeder, fitter, feeder, veterinarian, older sibling, or mentor—
it is critical to present the whole picture.

Because evaluation without context requires guessing.
And a guess is not good enough.

🎥 𝗩𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗢 𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗨𝗣
• Wash the pig
• Feed it like you would before sending it into the ring
• Person filming should stay stationary
• Showman should drive the pig TO the camera
Send:
• 15 sec side view
• 15 sec front view
• 15 sec rear view

🚫 UNHELPFUL VIDEO:
• Empty pigs with their head down
• Running pigs
• Panting hot pigs
• Pigs actively fighting the whip

Clip videos down to the most representative looks.
(We will post a reel sample video soon)

🧾 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗗𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡
• Current weight
• Weight 1–2 weeks ago
• Average daily gain since last check in
• Current ration
• Indicate whether feed amounts are daily totals or per feeding
• Exact feed amount by weight (buy a kitchen scale)
• Supplements / electrolytes / feed options at your disposal
• Upcoming show date
• Goals over the next 1–3 weeks

🍽️ 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗧𝗘
This is one of the most important pieces of context there is.
A skinny pig aggressively hunting feed is a completely different situation than a skinny pig refusing to clean up.
Those pigs do not get managed the same way.
And they should not receive the same advice.

🧠 𝗠𝗢𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧:
Tell your mentor what YOU think needs to change.

Do they need more shape?
Move more comfortably?
Too skinny?
More growth?
More rib and body?

Learning to evaluate your own livestock is part of becoming a better stockman.

Showing pigs takes a village—but the quality of communication will often dictate the quality of help you receive when there are limitations to boots-on-the-ground assistance.

Ask the questions that can get the answers that make a difference.
Context keeps hammers out the ditches. 🔨

We’re proud to sponsor the Wildcat Showdown.

Reinvesting in the shows that create real opportunities for our customers to grow is a core value for our operation—places to build skill, gain experience, and sharpen evaluation.

If you’ve got shoats on feed, this is one to circle.

With Kyle Baade in the ring, you’re getting a stockman we respect, with experience grounded in generating elite livestock.

We’re honored to support an event that gives back to the next step in the journey.

See you in Manhattan.

👁️ 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 “𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻’ 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝘆𝗲”

🔨 𝕂𝕖𝕖𝕡𝕚𝕟' 𝕋𝕙𝕖 ℍ𝕒𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕣 𝕆𝕦𝕥 𝕠𝕗 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝔻𝕚𝕥𝕔𝕙𝕖𝕤 𝟙𝟘𝟞 🛑

𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘴.

If I had a dime for every time I get asked about eyes—
“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘴?”
“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩?”
“𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘧𝘪𝘹 𝘪𝘵?”
…I’d have a lot of dimes.
And I’d still cringe a little every time.

Because the truth is—𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴.
• Was the pig like this when you bought it?
• Has it gotten worse?
• What’s the air quality like where it lives?
• Is it just red and watery?
• Or is there thick, mucoid discharge?
👉 Those answers matter more than the product you reach for.

🧠 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗢𝗻𝗲—𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲
Let’s just call it what it is.
Pigs don’t love having their eyes handled.
And eyes are sensitive.
So now you’re trying to:
• treat a delicate structure
• on an animal that resists
• restraint adds stress—and chaos
👉 Compliance becomes the limiting factor—fast.

🧼 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻
This should be obvious—but it’s not.
If the eye is crusted, dirty, and full of debris…
and you’re asking why it looks bad—

👉 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘣𝘺 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.
• Warm, clean water
• Soft rag
• Gently wipe away debris
• Use a warm compress
• Flush gently with warmed contact solution

Fighting infection doesn’t always mean 𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘥𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘴.
Sometimes it means removing 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵.

And do it with some intention:
• Be gentle
• Be patient
• Don’t make it a traumatic event

👉 Pig memory is real.
If you turn this into a fight, you just made tomorrow harder.

🌬️ 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
If eyes develop under your care:

👉 Air quality should be your first priority.
• Ammonia
• Dust
• Poor airflow
These are major drivers.

Non-negotiables:
• Clean pens
• Keep urine managed
• Use products like zeolite / Stall-Dry
• Improve ventilation

And when you check air quality:
Get down at the pig’s level and breathe.
3–4 feet higher isn’t the same environment.

🌾 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Look for foreign material:
• Straw
• Feed
• Dust

These cases:
• Come on quickly
• Often affect one eye more than the other
• Don’t improve until the irritation is gone
👉 This is where flushing and cleaning actually matter most.

🔥 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴
… you’ve done all that.
You came here to learn something about the hard ones.

So, let’s talk about it.

The chronic ones, the inflamed ones, the thickened ones.
• It’s been 7–10 days and non-responsive to treatments
• Thickened, elevated third eyelid (not just acute irritation)
• Minimal purulent discharge
• Swollen 3rd eyelids

𝘐’𝘮 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘰.

These:
• Might mildly improve… then come back
• or never fully resolve
👉 Because now you’re not just dealing with irritation—
you’re dealing with an inflammatory process that’s established.

💊 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Veterinary grade ophthalmic topicals can help—no question.
But:
• small tubes
• expensive
• hard to apply consistently

👉 In the real world, that limits their effectiveness.
So when:
• you’ve cleaned the eye
• fixed the environment
• done your due diligence
…and you’re still not winning—
That’s when the conversation changes.

💉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀”
You’ll hear a lot of things:
• Topical Antibiotic Ointments
• Steroids
• Even putting injectable products in the eye

Some people swear by it.
And sometimes… it looks like it works.

But:
Different problems respond to different tools.
That’s why results are all over the board.

🧠 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗦𝗲𝗲 𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗢𝗻𝗲𝘀
In the more advanced, chronic cases I manage:
It’s often not until we address the inflammatory cascade—
sometimes with 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳-𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘺 like Depo-Medrol—
that we see sustained improvement.

Not because every pig needs it.
Most definitely do not.
But some cases aren’t just infection—they’re inflammation.

⚠️ 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴
That kind of treatment:
• isn’t for every case
• isn’t something to casually reach for
• should ALWAYS involve your veterinarian

Because:
• there are real risks
• and it needs to be used appropriately
• major withdrawal considerations

🔑 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱:
If you want better outcomes:
Don’t start with “what do I treat this with?”

Start with:
“Why does this eye look like this?”

Because:
• Cause drives symptoms
• Cause drives treatment
• Cause explains why some pigs respond—and others don’t

💬𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲
Eyes aren’t simple.
But the people who get the best results don’t just treat them—
👉 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮.

𝙳𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚒𝚖𝚎𝚛: I’m not your vet. I won’t prescribe over the internet.
But I hope this helps you have a better conversation with the one you’ve got.
If pigs aren’t their wheelhouse—be easy to help. Donuts help.

🐖 𝘈𝘪𝘯’𝘵 𝘋𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘴.

The pig that:

𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥
𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨
𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴… 𝘰𝘧𝘧

👉 Easy to call it an ulcer and feel like a real stockman.

𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨.

But what do we do when they don’t respond like you expect?

𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸.

Started like a classic:

𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱...
𝘂𝗹𝗰𝗲𝗿-𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼... 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆?

We treated the gut:

softened the ration
supported the stomach per protocol
drove intake with palatability

👉 It helped… but not like it should have.

🔍𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹

It took about 7 to 10 days of gentle decline in the face of therapy before it told on itself.

𝘈 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘵.
Subtle. Nothing dramatic.

You had to be looking for a problem to find it.

We were.

So we snared her up and checked both ears—

Textbooks will tell you:

otitis externa is rare in pigs
otitis media is more common

👉 In showpigs… I don’t really buy that anymore.

𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨.
𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴.
𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘴.
𝘌𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘴.

We’re creating the perfect setup for debris and irritation to start in the canal.

The ear flush.

Full lavage and massage with TrizUltra + Keto (Dechra)

If you’ve never flushed ears before—
go watch how they do it in dogs.

Same concept.

👉 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨:

1. fill the canal
2. massage at the base
watch and feel it move and the flush should change color--usually brown as it breaks down debris
3. gentle wipe with cotton balls, gauze, or paper towels. 𝘘-𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘨𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘥𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨.
4. repeat

Irrigate. Agitate. Remove the problem.

🔊𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗬𝗲𝘀… 𝗜𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗱

Snare them up.
Exam gloves.
Controlled cleaning.

👉 Wear ear plugs.

💊 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀

We lean on Dechra-based flushes:

Triz EDTA
TrizUltra + Keto (for yeast coverage)

From there:

work with your veterinarian on systemic coverage if needed
consider anti-inflammatory support

⚠️ Always be mindful of withdrawal times, especially as projects get closer to show.

🧠 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀

Not every “ulcer pig” is a stomach problem.

Sometimes:

it’s pain
it’s irritation
it’s something simple you didn’t look at yet

🎯𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

Ain’t doing right?
Non-responder?
👉 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴.

🔨 Let's keep these hammers out of the ditches.
