It has been a fun, busy week at KE Equine with Addie, a student from Stoneleigh Burnham School, working with us. Addie was a very helpful assistant with appointments and got some great hands on learning. Addie is interested in possibly pursuing an equine veterinary career but I know after working with her this week she will have a successful career with horses as she clearly loves horses. It really gives me hope that we have an intelligent, horse loving young population out there who will be there to love and care for our horses in the future. So thank you Addie for an awesome week!

Today is KE Equine's 5th Anniversary ! Thank you to all the horses, clients, friends and supporters of KE Equine. It has been such an amazing journey. Here's to five great years down and many more to come ! I am spending the day in Denver at an ACVIM Certification Council meeting but I feel so fortunate since starting KE Equine that I have been able to dedicate time to more committee work with some great organizations like AAEP, RIVMA, AVMA, MVMA and ACVIM.

Today is World Veterinary Day. I feel very fortunate to be part of such a kind, helpful, encouraging group of professionals. I want to thank all the great veterinarians out there that have mentored me throughout my career. I am in awe how generous with their time and expertise equine veterinarians can be when I reach out with a question and they are happy to hop on a call or zoom and chat with me. Happy Veterinary Day to all my fellow veterinarians !

Fun day at the Morgan Dressage Association clinic with Joy Congdon at Fawn Meadow Farm. It was great to see some many of the young horses coming along so well. CompanAIn and EquestrAIn sponsored lunch and we had a great discussion about the app and how it can really help horse owners. Thank you MDA and Jen Cooke for hosting a great clinic.

I am so excited to announce the launch of the app CompanAIn. Check it out!

Dr. Kate and Debbie visited the hard working crew (and brought them Dunkin) at Mills River Rescue this morning. Even in these frigid temps, they get the hay soaked and all the metabolic minis well cared for. Here's to all the hard working volunteers and Patti for all they do for these special animals. Here's hoping when I am back next month the temperature will be 40+ degrees warmer.

I highly recommend this Horse Owner Webinar presented by AAEP with our local equine dentists Dr. Leah Limone and Dr. Kim Allshouse discussing "Equine Dentistry – A Closeup Look Inside Your Horse’s Mouth." This Wednesday Feb 4 at 8:00pm EST
If you've ever wondered what your veterinarian is looking for inside your horse’s mouth, this is your chance to find out! Learn what makes horse teeth unique and why oral exams and odontoplasty, or “floating,” are performed. They will also review what to expect during a dental appointment, common pathologies and diseases, and how dental management will often change as your horse ages.
Registration is FREE but required. A recording of the webinar will be available if you miss the live event. Register at: https://events.zoom.us/.../Au79KIEGlUQNYp3MIwhImixtX96-V...
This informative session is brought to you by the AAEP Horse Owner Education Committee.

Dr. Kate has been seeing many horses with laminitis this winter brought on by Equine Metabolic Syndrome, EMS. Many horses this time of year are ridden less, moving outside less and being fed more hay and for some horses especially EMS prone breeds that can lead to laminitis. Please also use caution with some commercial brand mashes and water additives as they can be high in sugar. Yes we want our horses staying hydrated and warm in this weather but please keep a close eye on foot comfort too. Dr. Kate also recommends if you own an EMS prone breed or an easy keeper that you have baseline metabolic bloodwork (insulin, adiponectin, leptin +/- oral sugar test) pulled. Breeds that are prone to EMS are Morgans, Welsh Cobs and ponies, Warmbloods, Paso Finos, Arabians, Andalusians, and miniature horses. But Dr. Kate has seen laminitis in pretty much ever breed of horse so she recommends knowing your horse's metabolic status. She is also seeing EMS induced laminitis in young horses too. If your horse is older testing for Cushing's is also a good idea. Stay warm and safe out there.

Dr. Kate is excited to announce her role as Equine Medical Director and Advisory Board member with Companain.ai
Companain.ai will launch very soon and it is an app that will help horse owners and equine vets provide better proactive medicine.
As many of you know, Dr. Kate is not very techy and has reservations about Artificial Intelligence, AI, but after meeting with the team at Companain.ai Dr. Kate felt very good about the way AI is used and all the guardrails in place that provide the owner with safe reliable information. Dr. Kate is very excited to be part of the Companain team and excited for all the things to come with this new tool. Please check out the website http://companain.ai/ and feel free to chat with Dr. Kate more about it.
KE Equine will continue work as normal and this new opportunity for Dr. Kate will not effect her still providing equine internal medicine services to horses in southern New England.
