A growing movement to end taxpayer funded animal testing is gaining attention after 1,500 beagles were rescued from Ridglan Farms in Wisconsin. Congressman Nick Langworthy says public outrage over how dogs are treated at facilities like Marshall BioResources in New York has increased calls for stronger protections for animals used in experiments.

Lawmakers and animal advocates are now pushing for legislation that would ban taxpayer funded breeding of dogs and cats for painful medical testing, and supporters say the rescued beagles have become symbols of a broader fight against cruelty in research facilities, hoping this momentum leads to lasting changes in animal welfare law. Do you think legislation like this actually has a real chance of passing?

Nassau County, New York, has enacted one of the most stringent anti-tethering regulations in the nation to combat animal neglect. The newly signed legislation establishes a protective framework that heavily restricts the amount of time dogs can legally be chained or tied up outdoors.

The updated rules dictate that an animal cannot be tethered for longer than a single hour within any given 12-hour window. Furthermore, the practice is entirely outlawed overnight between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., and it is strictly illegal to leave a dog tied up during severe weather events, such as extreme freezing or high heat. Individuals who break these rules will face intense legal consequences, which may include up to a full year of imprisonment, financial penalties reaching $1,000, and the potential forfeiture of their right to own pets. Lawmakers introduced this measure following widespread complaints regarding neglected dogs being left exposed to the elements for long stretches without companionship, interaction, or proper shelter. Welfare advocates have celebrated the decision, noting that prolonged tethering inflicts severe physical and psychological damage on animals. Ultimately, this change marks a massive shift toward ensuring a more secure, compassionate, and healthy existence for countless pets.

Fireworks can be stressful and scary for pets. 🎆🐾

Ahead of July 4th, take a few simple steps to help keep your pet safe, calm, and comfortable. Check that their ID tags and microchip info are up to date, prepare any calming aids they already use, create a quiet indoor space, and plan walks or outdoor time earlier in the day.

Keep pets indoors once fireworks begin, secure doors and windows, and never bring your pet to a fireworks show. Even calm pets can become frightened by loud, unexpected noises.
A little planning before the celebrations begin can make a big difference.

🇺🇸🎇

☀️ A heat wave is bringing extreme temperatures this week, so now is the time to take extra precautions to keep pets safe.

During extreme heat, pets should spend as much time as possible indoors, ideally in air conditioning, with access to plenty of fresh water. For dogs who need to go outside, keep walks and outdoor time short and avoid the hottest parts of the day.

🐾 Hot pavement can burn paws quickly, and heat-related dangers like dehydration, overheating, and heatstroke can become life-threatening. Review these tips to help keep your dog safe when temperatures soar.
