Amen, perfectly said. ๐
Tonight, they are safe.
For now, the world has paused. The stars hang gently overhead, and inside these walls, the chaos of survival has softened into stillness.
One day, soon, the doors will open, and they will return to the wild where they belong. Their wings will catch the wind, their paws will press again into soil not lined with towels but with roots and stones. They will live as nature intended-free.
But freedom carries its own weight.
There will be predators, some born of tooth and claw, and others of steel and oil. There will be traps laid in silence and poisons hidden in sweetness. There will be roads that do not stop for soft bodies. There will be people-cruel, careless, or simply ignorant-who will do harm without a second thought.
But tonight, they are safe.
They donโt know what waits. They only know this moment. A warm place to lie down. A full belly. Clean water. A voice that speaks softly. A hand that does not strike, but soothes. These are small mercies in a world that offers few.
When they leave us, they will know cold again. Hunger. Fear. Storms that tear through branches. Days without rest. Nights without shelter. Some will not make it. Nature is beautiful, but she is not kind.
But tonight, they are safe.
I walk through the quiet hum of incubators and oxygen machines. Behind each window and door, a story: some arrived broken, some orphaned, some barely alive. I see small eyes watching me-curious, cautious, tired. I see trembling bodies finally still. I see hope stitched together with exhaustion. I see them. I see the weight of pain. I feel the echo of every cry, every gasp, every last breath we couldn't save. This work-this calling-it does not brush off like dust. It burrows deep within.
The sighs of sleep, the quiet purring of comfort, the whimper of a dream-yes, animals feel, dream, grieve, and hope.
And tonight, they are safe.
They wonโt always be. But theyโve had what so many never will: a second chance. A moment of peace. Hands that healed. Eyes that saw them not as pests or problems, but as lives worth saving.
These are the lucky ones.
And so, as the night deepens and the world spins on outside, I hold onto that truth with both hands.
Tonight, they are safe.
Be kind to wildlife. Be kind to people. Be kind to yourself.
