I received a wonderful handwritten letter by snail mail on 4/15, Tax Day.

It stated a Shih Tzu puppy was born 11/8/2006 bred by me and purchased by a woman on 1/3/2007.
The buyer, Judy, had requested a friend to take her dog, Callie, if anything happened to her.
In 2011 Callie moved to Bev’s home at the age of 5 years old.

The letter said Callie was a wonderful fur pal to both women.
Bev said Callie was a sweet, even tempered, loving, little companion for Judy & then me.
Bev mentions that Callie was only sick for 2 days before she passed.
Callie died 4/11/2025 from acute kidney failure.

Callie lived to be 18 ½ years old.
6 ½ years beyond the average age for a Shih Tzu.
Callie’s first owner had her for 5 years.
Bev had her for another 13 ½ years.

There is nothing better than unconditional love.
There were forever pals with BIG Hearts to share.
What an awesome friendship to have.
What a thoughtful request to make and honor.
Callie’s paw prints will forever be in their hearts

Deworm your Dog with Natural Products

Parasite infestations can be frustrating. Knowing how to solve the issue without adding more chemicals to your dog’s immune system is key.
• Roundworms - 1 to 3” long, white & round worms. Dogs will often will have a bloated belly, can cause vomiting, diarrhea & weight loss. Might see worms in stools or on fur around the a**s.
• Whipworms, pinworms & hookworms – look similar to roundworms, usually thinner & longer, cause the same symptoms.
• Tapeworms – Flat, white, size of grains of rice that could be segments of the tapeworm. Usually from ingesting a flea or an animal that has fleas like a mouse.
• Coccidia – too small for humans to see. Diarrhea is usually the first sign. Usually brought on my stress.
• Giardia – is from infected water & causes diarrhea with blood or mucus in the stool.

How to prevent:
1. Pick up all f***s from your lawn or puppy pads.
2. Prevent your dog from eating other animals’ stools.
VIDEO LINK (Stop Your Dog from Eating P**p (Coprophagia) : New Remedies 4:38 minutes
3. Prevent your dog from drinking water that is from stagnant sources like puddles & small pools.
4. Flea control – rat & mice traps (Tomcat bait stations), wash bedding every 15 days.
Spray essential oils on your dog before going to the vet or other events.
RECIPE: Terra Shield by DoTerra – use a glass spray bottle, ½ teaspoon salt, 3 drops of essential oil to 1 oz of water, shake of mist your beast…works for you too to repel insects.
Check for fleas before returning home. Use a flea comb

5. Keep dog dishes, bedding clean.

Treatments:
Best to use the below treatments for 30 days to stop the cycle first killing the adults then to keep the eggs from hatching.

DIATOMACEOUS EARTH - holistic de-wormer. Purchase DE that is food grade.
Do not use DE that is for pools or gardens, it can damage your dog.
Dose - 1/2 teaspoon per 10 pounds, twice daily for all internal parasites. Sprinkle on your dog’s food or mix with canned food.

DE works for fleas, apply DE by sprinkling it slowly (to prevent a dust storm) on the fur, keep away from your dog’s eyes & nose. You may want to wear a mask & eye protection.

PUMPKIN SEED - used for tapeworms. Dose is 1 teaspoon of roughly ground seeds per 10 pounds.
Use a coffee grinder to break the seeds into smaller parts but not into powder. Sprinkle on their food or mix with canned food.

GARLIC – for giardia, 1/4 clove per 10 pounds daily for 14 days.

Do we need a paradigm shift in canine neutering?
Sources: dvm360, Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine Article by Dr. Andrew Jones, DVM

The history of spay and neuter
In the 19th century, urbanization and increased pet ownership were catalysts for performing neuters. Owners found a pet’s heat cycle in their home to be inconvenient, so neuters were performed to eliminate this annoyance. In the 1950s, neutering became the solution to overpopulation of pets in New York City. By the 1960s, when compliance to neuter contracts was low, humane groups made neutering a requirement prior to pet adoption. In 1975, the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommended early neuter to get as many pets neutered before adoption as possible. Then in 1993, the American Veterinary Medical Association supported early neuter for the purpose of curbing overpopulation.

A standard of practice
Neutering young dogs between 6 and 9 months of age is now common practice. This practice in the US contrasts with many European countries, where neutering is quite uncommon. For example, in Norway, it’s illegal to neuter a pet unless there is a valid medical reason. With these opposing philosophies, veterinarians in the US have begun questioning the validity of the juvenile neuter approach. Practitioners are asking: What are the clinical effects of removing these hormones? How early is too early? Are there even benefits to spay and castration?

Spay and neuter benefits
Preventing mammary tumors is a well-known justification for spaying females before their first heat. Every vet student reads the classic paper, which reports only half a percent of female dogs developing mammary tumors if they are spayed prior to their first heat. In contrast, 26% develop tumors if they are spayed after their second heat. Removing these hormones has also been shown to decrease or eliminate the development of reproductive tract tumors and pyometra, which affects nearly 1 in 4 intact females by age 10. It also eliminates other things, such as bleeding in the house and unwanted pregnancies. Additionally, there is evidence that these pets may live longer.

Castration removes the risk of testicular cancer, which affects 27% of intact males. Removing cryptorchid testicles is particularly important, as they have a significantly higher risk of developing tumors. There is also a reduced risk of prostate hyperplasia, perianal tumors, and perineal hernias with castration. There is even indication that castration decreases unwanted behaviors, such as urine marking in the house, roaming (which can lead to injury and reduced lifespan via fights and getting hit by cars), and mounting

Unintended consequences
Spay and castration have a handful of negative effects worth noting. To start, it is a surgical procedure, which carries an inherent 6% risk of complications, including incisional infections and anesthetic events.

Urinary Incontinence
It also increases the risk of urinary incontinence in females. Fewer than 1% of intact females develop incontinence, but 4% to 20% of spayed females are at risk. This risk goes up when spayed before 3 months of age.

Another concern is leaving a pet with immature genitalia. Immature, recessed vulvas can lead to urinary tract infections and perivalvar dermatitis. Spay and castration have also been reported to increase the risk for hypothyroidism and vaccine reactions. Further, spaying can predispose females to aggression toward family members. There may also be a faster progression of cognitive impairment in neutered pets, especially males. Finally, obesity, which has its own set of risks, is much more common in both spayed and castrated pets.

ACL Injuries
There are also orthopedic considerations for pets neutered at a young age. Early neuter has been shown to delay growth plate closure, resulting in taller pets. By altering bone growth, a pet’s conformation is affected and may predispose them to excessive tibial plateau angles. When the tibial plateau angle is excessive, there is a significantly greater risk of developing cranial cruciate ligament disease in 1 or both knees. Hip dysplasia has also been found to be more common in altered pets, especially when neutered before 6 months of age.

Cancer
In addition to the above medical concerns, there are also various cancers that have been shown to be more prevalent in neutered pets. Mast cell tumors, hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma have been reported to occur more frequently in neutered pets.

A study of Rottweilers found that when spayed prior to 1 year of age, females had nearly 3 times the risk of developing osteosarcoma, and males had almost 4 times the risk. For neutered males, there is also about 4 times the risk of developing prostate cancers.

UC DAVIS Study

A new, 10-year study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, examined 35 dog breeds and found vulnerability from neutering, and the age at which they are neutered, varies greatly depending on the breed.
Some dog breeds have a higher risk of developing certain cancers and joint disorders if neutered or spayed within their first year of life. Until now, studies had only assessed that risk in a few breeds. A new, 10-year study by researchers at the University of California, Davis, examined 35 dog breeds and
found vulnerability from neutering varies greatly depending on the breed. The study was published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Previous studies have found that neutering or spaying female golden retrievers at any age increases the risk of one or more of the cancers from 5 percent to up to 15 percent.

When to spay and neuter
DISCUSS CHOICES WITH VETERINARIANS

Dog owners in the United States are overwhelmingly choosing to neuter their dogs, in large part to prevent pet overpopulation, euthanasia or reduce shelter intake. In the U.S., surgical neutering is usually carried out by six months of age.

This study suggests that dog owners should carefully consider when and if they should have their dog neutered.

"We think it's the decision of the pet owner, in consultation with their veterinarian, not society's expectations that should dictate when to neuter," said Benjamin Hart. "This is a paradigm shift for the most commonly performed operation in veterinary practice."

Best Wishes,

Dr Andrew

P.S. IF I were to have a puppy, I would wait until 2 years of age before SPAY or NEUTER.

HOW TO REMOVE A STICKY MOUSE TRAP FROM DOG!

As funny as it can be to see your 4-legged hound doing the walk of shame with 4 sticky traps on each paw, it is pretty uncomfortable for your fur beast.

Use the following methods to remove a sticky mouse glue trap from dog:
Wear gloves to protect the glue from sticking to you and examine the situation.
1. Use lubricant to soften the glue.
vegetable or mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or cooking spray.
Apply the lubricant around the area of the trap and let it sit for several minutes before attempting to remove the adhesive. Use a comb or scissor or shaver to remove the trap. Be patient and gentle, it is already scary for your pooch.
2. Use acetone or nail polish remover.
3. Sprinkle with cornstarch.
4. Use dish soap and warm water.
5. Use peanut butter.
6. Use vinegar.
7. Bring to a vet.

Rinse your dog’s fur and shampoo to wash away the residue.

Place future traps where your beast cannot get access to them again.

Loving Memory to Rhea aka The Beast.

On May 12 of 2008 a litter of 5 Bichons was born in our Ardyweb kennel. Rhea became my little sister’s family’s dog nicknamed The Beast. Rhea passed on May 2, 2024 after having a stroke, just short 10 days of sweet 16. It was a ruff day for my sibling.

Rhea’s parents were Nina & Elvis, both registered Bichons. Nina liked to sort the boys from the girls in the whelping box. It was fun to watch her resort the puppies when I mixed them back together. However, she could not sort with Rhea’s siblings since they were all girls. Elvis’s name fit him well & he was king of the kennel.

Rhea was an asset to her family. When my mom had her stroke in August of 2008, Rhea became her therapy dog. Rhea loved to cuddle with mama and helped her heal in ways that are magical. She also was a comfort to all who visited mom in the hospital & later nursing homes before returning home. Rhea always knew who needed loving even at 3 months of age.

She chased a black bear out of the Spooner cottage while everyone was sleeping. My mom was sleeping in a lazy boy chair in the living room after her stroke. Mama woke up to witness the little 10-pound furball barking, chasing the bear out of the living room, kitchen and out the screened door. The next morning revealed how the bear came in, claw marks were imprinted into the screen to pull the door open. Little did the bear know that Rhea the beast would be ready to do battle and defend her human family.

Another time Rhea let her dog’s parents know that someone was attempting to siphon gas out of the fishing boat parked in their driveway. Rhea was better than ring.com protection and she only charged room and board.

She loved to chase chipmunks and turkeys. My sister got a lot of exercise trying to keep her safe and quiet.

She followed my sibling’s husband like a shadow. If you wanted to know where he was just look for the dog.

My favorite thing about Rhea was she always remembered me. At family get togethers I would receive the puppy dance of joy. There is nothing better than to be on the receiving end of her unconditional love. She loved everyone and showed it.

Rhea will always have my heart and her paws prints will remain there forever.
Remember to wag your tail and not your tongue.
Always be loyal.
The best therapist has fur and 4 legs.

Forever in love with Rhea
