So, what makes someone a professional pet sitter or dog walker?

✅A professional treats pet care as a real business.

✅That means being insured, using contracts, following industry best practices, and committing to ongoing education.

👉Hobbyists or casual sitters—like a neighbor or friend who occasionally watches pets or someone who just posts a profile on a pet-sitting app—may not have these standards in place.

✅The difference? Professional sitters are focused on reliability, safety, and offering top-notch service that pet parents can count on.

PSI offers the following tips for pet parents looking for a professional pet-sitting or dog-walking service:

1️⃣ Be specific about your needs. 👉Professional pet sitters and dog walkers typically offer a variety of service options, so specify your needs up front, whether those include daily dog walks, visits to administer medication, enrichment activities for your cat, potty breaks for a new puppy, or occasional visits due to a hybrid-work schedule.

2️⃣ Prioritize quality. 👉Pet parents should not let click-and-select convenience of online sites overshadow the importance of doing their due diligence when selecting a pet sitter. Any pet lover can post their services online for a cheap price, but professional pet-care providers will have the training, credentials and insurance coverage needed to provide excellent pet care and protect clients and their homes.

3️⃣ Meet the sitter in person. 👉PSI always recommends pet parents schedule an initial consultation or “meet and greet” at their home—with pets present—before booking pet-care services. This allows the pet parent to meet the pet sitter, review their policies and credentials, and make sure they are the best fit for their family.

4️⃣ Ask the right questions. 👉Pet parents can download a free pet-sitter interview checklist from PSI at www.petsit.com/locate. This checklist includes seven important questions you should ask any pet sitter or dog walker you are considering hiring.

Have you ever thought about this? I take my business VERY seriously.

Have you ever thought about this? I take my business VERY seriously.

As any pro pet sitter or dog walker will tell you, running a pet-care business is NO JOKE!

Here at PSI, we always say that pet sitting isn’t for the faint of heart🖤—and on a day that typically focuses on jokes, we want to stop and thank professional pet sitters and dog walkers for the serious work they do!

⭐For any who have ever wondered, “Is pet sitting (or dog walking) a real job?” The answer is ABSOLUTELY.✔

👉Professional pet sitters and dog walkers are small-business owners—vital contributors to their communities and local economy.

👉They have a business license (where required), pay taxes, are insured, bonded, and trained in pet care and pet first aid.

👉They work year-round to ensure pet parents can have the peace of mind offered by quality, reliable pet care when long work hours or travel keep them from their beloved pets.

⭐Being a professional pet-sitting or dog-walking business owner is more than dog walks and cat cuddles.

👉Ask any professional pet sitter who has missed holidays with their families, extended pet-sitting visits to ensure an ailing pet was comforted or felt the loss of a client’s pet passing.

👉Or better yet, ask one of the hundreds of thousands of pet parents who benefit from the services of professional pet sitters and dog walkers every year.

👉Ask the pet owner who was alerted by his professional pet sitter that his dog’s behavior was unusual and recommended an emergency vet visit—saving the dog from dying from canine bloat.

👉Ask the pet parent who was able to call her pet sitter at 2 a.m. when she learns that her mother—on the other side of the country—has been admitted to the hospital in critical condition and is able to secure pet care as she rushes to the airport.

👉Ask the family whose professional pet sitter has graciously agreed to sit with them as their 15-year-old cat with late-stage chronic renal failure has to be euthanized.

Spend a day with a pro pet sitter or dog walker and you’ll know what those of us at PSI know without question:

♥Pet sitting is no joke! It’s a career…a lifestyle…a passion.♥

THANK YOU to the pet sitters and dog walkers making the world a better place for pets and their people!

Need a pet sitter for an upcoming trip? Hire a PROFESSIONAL!

PSI advises pet parents to do their due diligence to ensure they are hiring true professionals. The association offers a few tips:

1️⃣. Schedule an in-person meeting. PSI advises pet parents to schedule an in-person meeting with any potential pet sitter they are considering. This “meet and greet” or “initial consultation” gives pet parents an opportunity to meet the pet sitter, see them interact with their pets, and review their services as well as their credentials and policies.

2️⃣. Ask the right questions. PSI’s free Pet Sitter Interview Checklist at www.petsit.com/locate includes important questions every pet parent should ask—from whether the pet-sitting company is bonded and insured to whether they use a pet-sitting services agreement or contract.

3️⃣. Ask for recommendations if needed. Don’t delay booking your professional pet sitter. Many professional pet sitters find that their schedules get booked up quickly. If the professional pet-sitting service you contact is booked, be sure to ask them for a recommendation, as most are happy to provide referrals to other reputable pet-sitting companies in your area.

It is estimated that more than 300 dogs took part in the search, rescue and recovery efforts at ground zero in the aftermath of 9/11. In addition to search and rescue dogs, therapy dogs were also brought in to provide much-needed comfort to first responders.

Today on the anniversary of 9/11, we pause to remember our heroes—both human and canine.
