Yesterday I had one of those conversations that stayed with me long after I locked the salon doors.
A client wanted to negotiate the cost of their dog’s groom. We previously discussed and booked a behavioral grooming appointment with the mutual understanding that it was two trained groomers working together for over two hours.
Although I understand her position that financially it didn’t work for her it made me realize something...
As groomers, we don’t always do a good job showing clients what happens behind the scenes.
When a dog struggles with grooming, we don’t simply “get through it.” We slow down. We adjust our approach. We bring in a second groomer when needed. We protect our team while helping a dog learn that grooming can become a safe, positive experience.
That takes time, patience, skill, and experience.
The truth is, our industry isn’t regulated. There is no requirement for education or certification before someone can call themselves a groomer and/or open a salon. My team and I choose a different path. We invest thousands of dollars in continuing education, advanced handling techniques, quality equipment, and safer practices—not because we have to, but because your pets deserve it.
Our goal has never been to rush dogs through the salon. It’s to give them the best experience possible, even when that means extra time and specialized care.
A great groom isn’t just about the haircut—it’s about earning a dog’s trust for years to come.

These two are already packed for the weekend and refusing to believe the rain has any authority over their vacation plans. Bandanas? Check. Beach vibes? Check. Aloha attitude? Absolutely. 🌺🐾
Here’s hoping the clouds take a hint and make way for sunshine, salty air, sandy paws, and all the tail wags this weekend has to offer. Until then, these top dogs will be patiently waiting... probably by the window. 🏖️❤️

☀️ HAPPY SUMMER! ☀️
Now that school is out for the summer, you'll occasionally see my daughters around the salon. They have grown up here and have loved being part of the salon since they were babies. You will find them vacuuming, cleaning up puppy “accidents”, rinsing out the tubs for the stylists, giving pups words of encouragement when needed, and of course knowing when to exit left to the office when their presence is too exciting. You may even catch them walking your pups out to the lobby for us. Watching them interact with the dogs and clients over the years and learn as much as they have has been one of my greatest joys.
While summer brings a little more family time and plenty of adventures, I'll be keeping my school-year schedule mostly the same so I can continue supporting my daughters' activities while still being available for our amazing clients. I've already made a few adjustments where needed to help fit everyone in and keep things running smoothly. So if we hit a scheduling snag with myself or any of the Sassy Stylists just reach out and let’s see what we can make work.
One thing I've learned over the years is that Sassy Paws is so much bigger than just me. The incredible team beside me—especially with Lauren and Shannon over our many years together, has become family. Time and time again, these ladies have proven that they are dedicated, compassionate, and exceptionally skilled professionals. I couldn't be more proud of the care they provide when I'm away from the salon.
My husband and I have spent a lot of time talking about how we can help our team continue to grow both professionally and personally. This summer, we'll be introducing some exciting improvements, implementing new policies, and streamlining our booking and communication processes to better serve both our clients and our staff.
One thing that truly frustrates me is when we miss an opportunity to connect with a new client or respond promptly to one of our existing clients because we're busy doing what we do best…..caring for the dogs. As groomers, our hands are often occupied, making it difficult to answer the phone throughout the day. My goal is to create systems that allow us to communicate more efficiently while also giving us the opportunity to build even stronger relationships with the families we serve.
Thank you for continuing to trust us with your beloved pups. Your support allows me to build a business centered around family, passion, and exceptional care.

Welcome to Sassy Paws, sweet Nola! 💕
Nola is a newly adopted Standard Poodle belonging to one of our longtime clients. While our hearts still hold a special place for Gracie, who was so dearly loved by both her family and our team, we are honored to be part of Nola’s next chapter.
One of the most important things pet parents should know is that a dog’s first few grooming appointments aren’t just about getting a haircut. They’re about building trust.
During these early visits, we focus on helping Nola become comfortable with the sights, sounds, smells, and handling involved in the grooming process. We take the time to build a positive relationship with her groomer, evaluate the condition of her skin and coat, and learn more about her individual needs. This allows us to recommend the most appropriate products and create a grooming plan that complements both her coat texture and her unique structure.
Education is a huge part of what we do. While appointment times don’t always allow us to share every detail of the thought process behind your pet’s care, we’re grateful to have social media as a way to provide insight into the knowledge, experience, and intention that go into every groom.
