HELP I FOUND A BABY Bunny! WHAT DO I DO?
Rabbit nests are usually shallow depressions in the ground, usually in grassy areas, covered with grass clippings, dry grasses, and fur from the mother, “doe” rabbit. The doe rabbit spends most of her day away from her nest, so she doesn’t draw attention to the nest’s location. She will only return twice a day- at dawn and dusk- to feed the babies.
Many rabbit nests go unnoticed; however, on occasion, a pet, lawnmower, or gardener will expose the nest. Just because a nest has been exposed does not mean the babies need to be brought to a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. If the babies are unharmed and have not been in another animal’s mouth, cover the nest back up and attempt the string test described below. If the baby has been in a cat or dog’s mouth, has visible wounds or injuries, or shows signs of abandonment, please contact a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator.
Rabbits sometimes build nests in yards with dogs. You cannot take rabbits just because the nest is in a yard with a dog, and chances of survival are always better with mom's care. Baby rabbits are on their own at around 3-4 weeks of age (when they are the size of a tennis ball with eyes open). During this time consider walking your dog(s) or place a laundry basket over the nest and secure it with a heavy object. Cut a hole in the basket or remove it before dusk so the doe can access the nest.
String Test:
1. Lay string or twigs in a tic-tac-toe pattern over the nest
2. Leave the area for 24 hours (a doe will not go to her nest if you are there)
3. Check back for any disturbance
If the items are moved, that means the mother has likely visited, and the babies do not need intervention.
If the items are undisturbed and the babies appear weak, cold, wet, dehydrated, and/or covered in fly eggs, please contact a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator. Then, place the bunnies in a box with a towel, and keep the baby warm with a rice sock or warm water bottle underneath the box.
Never feed or give water! Baby bunnies require a species-specific formula that is not sold in stores. Improper feeding can cause fatal digestive issues or aspiration pneumonia. Many are dehydrated and must be stabilized first. Baby bunnies are also a high-stress species, making them prone to capture myopathy, which can lead to death. Please handle the baby as little as possible; many people mistake them sitting still when being held as a sign that they are calm or enjoy it. This is actually a prey response to a perceived threat and is extremely stressful.
In Nebraska, it is illegal to care for wildlife without a license. Finders have 48 hours to get the animal to a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator, but they should do so ASAP to give the animal the best chance at survival.
