What do you do when you have a loud chicken and live in the city? In the process of building the coop, I realized if I planned a little more and fine tuned things, I could build with minimal material waste and build a stronger and better coop than offered at local farm stores. I then decided to post what I built for my friend on craigslist to see if I could find anyone else interested in another c

oop while I was in the hospital from an appendix removal, and that day, one was ordered. And so began the fun of building coops and projects for people all over Michigan. I fell in love with meeting other like-minded people who value a sense of self-sustainability by raising their own chickens/eggs.

Urban homesteading at its finest in downtown Muskegon with a newly installed chicken coop and run system!

It fit into the backyard with the simple removal of an 8’ fence panel. Once installed again, it totally hid the coop from street view.

It was great to talk to a neighbor in the area that passed by and said other neighbors a block over, and an even local charter school down the road, had chickens.

With modular designs, anything becomes possible sometimes just by swapping out or doubling up something!

This customer had me install two of my normal 7x8 runs to make one large run that is 14x8 not counting the run space under the coop. Their hens are going to love all that space, even on rainy or snowy days with that metal roof over the run!

It was built and traveled as three items and once on-site, all become one unified system.

We took advantage of a beautiful day last week to record a walk around video of an install in Caledonia.

This one has is the large coop and connected 7x8 run wrapped in 1/2” hardware cloth on the bottom 2’ of the run and under the coop for great protection and longevity, and an additional metal roof over the run for shade in the summer and shedding of water and snow in bad weather. $1300 as seen in the video, with other configurations for different budgets and flock sizes.

My bantam makes me laugh with her overachiever mentality! So much spirit in such a little body!

We also installed another great coop system for a customer in Portage, MI the other day. All 1/2” hardware cloth, metal roof on run, and easy to access exterior nesting boxes with easy to clean deep liter method coop design. Cleans in 5min!

The weather couldn’t have been better for the installation.

Today we installed my other lean-to style chicken run with a galvanized metal roof in Muskegon. The final result looked pretty snazzy, especially in today’s bright sun!

The whole roofline of the coop and run is at the same angle, which allows the run’s front door frame to be almost 6’ at the entrance. Lots of city ordinances have a 6’ height limit for the whole coop system, so this still easily complies with that like my normal 6’ gable-style (peaks to 6’ in the middle) runs always have. And the best part is material and production costs are the same!

This design would be great for reclaiming all the coop system’s roof water with just one low profile gutter for garden plants and the chickens.

Another great couple of days installing coops from Muskegon to Brant to Port Austin! I was able to see some beautiful farmlands and small towns across the state.

Made a walk around video of an install this last weekend that shows some good features of my large chicken coop systems. The nesting box blocker board helps when wanting to block it for a couple nights if the hens start getting in a bad habit of sleeping in there beyond just being broody. This also features metal roof on the 7x8 run and bottom 2' of the run and under the coop done in 1/2" hardware cloth for added longevity and predator prevention.
