The microschool planning is well underway. If you have a 3rd through 8th grader in the Fall of 2026 and interested in our microschool plans reach out.
A typical day at Dogwood Oaks is not a typical school day. Students will engage in basic instruction tied to topics of interests and learning activities will be tailored to each child’s needs.
Here are just a few examples of learning at Dogwood Oaks:
Arrival and Breakfast- students will participate in creating a meal by measuring ingredients, learning food safety, and cooperation while applying math, literacy, and science in a practical skill of meal preparation. Meals will be served family style and eaten together.
Morning Devotional-
The group will gather for a morning devotional and prayer time.
Animal and Plants check-in- students will check on their farm animal and ensure the animal’s needs are met for the day. There are over 50 animals on the farm currently with plans to add more as needed. There are garden plots throughout the farm and each student will have their own plants to care for year round, if they wish. We will also have hydroponics and aquaculture set ups developed by the students.
Business work time- each student will be encouraged to start a small business on the farm. This time will be devoted to development and ex*****on of their own plan.
Literacy- daily reading and writing lessons based on individual student needs and goals. Every day will include writing a response to something throughout the day. This could include, writing a letter to a grandparent telling them about the topic they are studying, creating a post to advertise their farm stand product, summarizing a book we are reading, writing a lab report about the day’s science topic, sharing citizen science data with organizations or creating an email to a government office sharing thoughts about a topic.
Math skills- not only will students become fluent in numeracy, students will be required to apply their mathematical reasoning skills to running their business and various projects around the farm. Planning and building projects will give reasons for utilization of those important skills.
Science focused time- science is all around us and students will be designing and engineering investigations to solve problems and gather information naturally throughout the day and lessons will be focused on scientific skills and practices.
Social studies, Civics, and Economics- will have devoted lessons each day, as well as, practical application. Understanding how our government works, the geography of our state, country and world and how all of those are connected to resources and economic opportunities will help our students become informed citizens.
Students will practice handwriting and keyboarding skills. Field trips will be offered weekly to points of interest throughout the state.
In other words, DWO students are business men and women, scientists, authors, farmers, horticulturalists, conservationists, mathematicians and so much more.
