🐾 Meet Luke! 💙

Hi, my name is Luke, and I’m a 2-year-old, neutered male Boxer mix looking for my forever home. 🐶

I was surrendered to the shelter through no fault of my own. My owner experienced some difficult personal life changes and thought she had found the perfect long-term sitter for me until she could get back on her feet. Unfortunately, they failed to tell her they were in the process of losing their home. 💔

My owner was faced with the hardest decision she’s ever had to make and had to surrender me. She promised me that the ladies at the shelter would find me the perfect family, and I’m really hoping they’re right. ❤️

I can be a little shy at first, but once I trust you, I’ll be your best friend! 🥰 I absolutely love other dogs of all sizes and would be happy to meet potential doggy siblings.

I have never been around children or cats, so introductions to either would need to be handled carefully.

At 9 years old, (35-40lbs) sweet Laney was surrendered after her owner went into a nursing home. 💔 Now she is struggling in the shelter and isn’t eating. Kansas City Pet Project reached out asking for help because Laney desperately needs a home.

Laney does well with people and other dogs, knows sit and come, and loves sleeping in her dog bed. She does best without small pets like cats, hamsters or guinea pigs.

Laney needs the soft landing she deserves.

🐾 LET’S TALK ADOPTIONS!🐾

Over the past year, we’ve gotten some really great questions about how adoptions work here at the shelter, so we thought we’d answer a few of the most common ones! ❤️

🐶🐱 Do you do FREE adoptions?”

No. And there’s a reason for that.

Our animals are not free.They are living, breathing family members who deserve to be valued and cared for. We take their adoptions seriously because we want to make sure they are going to someone who is truly committed to them for the rest of their lives.

🏠 “Do you actually vet your adopters?”

YES! Absolutely!

We want our adopters to understand what comes with bringing an animal home. We talk about food, nutrition, exercise, training, housing, other pets and the individual needs of the animal they are interested in. (And many more important needs/questions)

And yes, we HAVE turned down adoptions. If an animal’s needs cannot be met, the answer is going to be no. We’ve also had to turn people away because they were over their legal pet limit or their apartment did not allow the breed or number of animals they wanted to adopt.

📞 “Do you follow up after adoption?”

YES! ❤️ We love hearing from our adopters!

We try to check in throughout those first couple of months because we genuinely want to know how our former shelter babies are doing. We want to see the happy updates, the pictures, the progress and everything in between!

💔 “What happens if I can’t keep my adopted pet?”

BRING THEM BACK TO US.

We ask every adopter that if life ever changes and they can no longer keep their adopted pet—for ANY reason—bring them back to us.

We would rather have them safely returned to our shelter than abandoned, given away online, or placed somewhere unsafe.

Because adoption isn't just about getting an animal out of a kennel.

It’s about finding them a FOREVER home.❤️

We may ask questions. We may say no. We may take our time.

But every single thing we do is because we are trying to protect the animals who depend on us.

Our goal isn't the fastest adoption. Our goal is the RIGHT adoption.🐾❤️

🎉🐾 A HUGE CELEBRATION HERE AT NKC ANIMAL SHELTER!🐾🎉 Not only did we empty our canine kennels once this week but twice!!!

ALL of our adoptable canines have officially found their forever homes!🥹❤️

Every dog that walked through our doors deserved a second chance, and today we get to celebrate knowing they are all going home to families who will love them. 🏡🐶

There is nothing better than seeing empty kennels and happy endings!❤️
