Kitten season is here!
This time of year, we see a huge increase in kittens coming into the shelter—many of them brought in with the best intentions but not always needing to be removed from where they were found.
If you find stray kittens, here’s what to do:
Look for mom first
Mother cats often leave their kittens temporarily to find food. If the kittens appear clean, quiet, and not in immediate danger, monitor from a distance—mom is likely nearby.
Wait and watch
Give it a few hours (even up to 8–12 if safe) to see if mom returns. She is their best chance for survival.
Don’t “kit-nap” healthy kittens
Removing kittens too soon can actually put them at greater risk, especially if they are very young.
Intervene if needed
If kittens are injured, sick, in immediate danger, or mom does not return, that’s when it’s time to step in and contact Animal Services.
Be part of the solution
If you’re able, fostering can make a life-saving difference during this busy season.
Kitten season can bring hundreds of kittens through our doors, and we rely on our community to help us give them the best chance possible.
