Saturday was a special, bittersweet day.

Sunday marked 1 year since Sammy's last show, and 6 months ago I was dreaming about him going into the veteran ring this weekend. The universe had different plans for us and Saturday Mazikeen stepped into the conformation ring for the first time.

Maze wore Sammy's show collar and lead, with the 24 inch collar being adorably too big on her. This was her first time on a show lead, second time on a slip style lead/collar and first time in a show environment- and she truly did Sammy proud.

Mazikeen stepped into that ring like she's showed 100 times before. She was confident, patient and so happy to play the conformation game. We were in the ring for over 20 minutes due to an anxious puppy throwing up, surrounded by a couple puppies having a hard time and she was still unflappable. It felt like having Sammy at the end of my lead again.

She welcomed the judge's exam, gaited like a pro - wagging her tail the whole time like it was the best thing she's ever done. She even did Sammy's signature lounge in the ring while we waited for the class to resume.

Though Sammy should have been here with us, its an honor to have this sweet, confident girl as a potential continuation of my program. From day one I've felt like Mazikeen is going to go far, and step by step she's been helping me heal. She's got big paws to fill, but she's growing so fastšŸ’š

Pictured below is Mazikeen from Saturday (9/13/25) and Sammy's first show at CCKC on 9/16/2023 where he pulled a Group 1.

Ears that make poor choices (like trying to rose in the oddest ways) get taped. Maze handled it very well for her first time getting taped, hopefully that trend continues!

Introducing Cimerron’s Retribution for Sam ā€œMazikeenā€ by Warrior River’s Rougaroux and out of Winged’s TophBeifong. I’ve been following the planning of this litter for nearly a year, and man did Rougar and Toph give me what I ordered. Sweet, friendly, and promising from fantastic parents who’ve worked themselves, as well as the sire being a proven working producer (this is the dam’s first litter). I’m very excited to start our adventures together, I’ve got big plans for us.

Maze’s registered name is based on the litter theme, comeback, and as an homage for Sammy, who recently passed. I knew whatever puppy was picked for me would be named Cimerron’s Retribution, but after Sam passed from lyme and the complications from old injuries inflicted upon him by people who abused him and lied about it, the breeder reached out and asked if I wanted to add the last two words to her name. I have so many goals for Mazikeen and I as a team, so I think her name is a good way to state our intentions and honor the best boy who left us too soon.

Mazikeen has some big shoes to fill, but I know she will do all that and more!

Huge thank you to my mentor and co owner, Cimerron Kennels, for raising this sweet girl and picking me to be her owner, I can’t thank you enough!

Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my best boy, RBIS Ch Sandstone Crk’s Sampson TKI CGCA. Sammy was one of a kind, could turn it on and bay up a storm, then turn around be led by a child anywhere. He was the epitome of a catahoula- loyal, brave, protective, honest, stubborn, stoic, drivey, versatile. He was down for any job, whether it was the years he spent as my service dog, chasing off coyotes, treeing, herding, or tracking the bear that harassed the horses.

ā€œMost of all, he was my best friend and he’s gone too soonā€ -Sturgill Simpson ā€œSamā€

Today, as we celebrate the birth of our country, let’s also take a look a some of the amazing American created dog breeds, including our very near and dear Coonhounds & Catahoulas šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

ā„ļø Alaskan Malamute ā„ļø created by the Inuit people in northwest Alaska, the Malamute was bred for strength and endurance as a freighting sled dog that also packed loads on dry land during summer, helped locate seals under the ice, and even distracted polar bears on hunts

šŸ’› Carolina Dog šŸ’› incredibly unique breed that can still be found feral today in rural areas of the southern Carolina and Georgia border and are known as a primitive sight hound breed

šŸ¦ Coonhounds šŸ¦ most of my clients have met one or two of my amazing Redbone Coonhounds, one of the seven registered breeds of Coonhound that also include Black & Tans, Blueticks, English, Leopards, Plotts, and Treeing Walkers. These breeds are steeped in American history, with George Washington himself being a prominent houndsman in his time. Although they’re named for the pursuit of raccoons, these tenacious hunters are also commonly used on squirrels and even big game such as bear, mountain lions, and wild hogs

šŸŽŖ Toy Fox Terrier šŸŽŖ these small, agile, and clever dogs began breed history as barn yard ratters; keeping feed & crops safe from vermin. But they also gained great popularity in show business as circus and show performers as trick dogs

šŸ‘ Australian Shepherd šŸ‘ despite having the word ā€œAustralianā€ in their name, the modern Aussie actually originated in California, brought by the Basques settlers as they settled in the American west. Aussies developed an iconic part of Cowboy culture, with many still being found on working farms, stock yards, barns, and rodeos

šŸ¤Ž American Water Spaniel šŸ¤Ž Also known as the Wisconsin State Dog, this breed was created to hunt the Great Lakes area by acting as an efficient water retriever but also excelling and ā€œspringingā€ on land to flush upland game birds as well. This breed is rare, with only 3000 currently in existence

šŸ¦† Chesapeake Bay Retriever šŸ¦† Developed in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia and Maryland, these large and powerful retrievers fetched an extraordinary amount of birds for their handlers, with the bay hosting one third of all migratory birds on the east coast

šŸ–¤ Boston Terrier šŸ–¤ these compact dogs can trace their history back to a Liverpool England trend of crossing small ratting terriers with bulldog breeds, resulting in a dog named ā€œJudgeā€. Judge was sold to Bostonian Robert Hooper in 1870 and became the patriarch of the Boston Terrier breed. Through selective breeding and New England Bulldog genealogy the breed evolved and the Boston Terrier Club was established in 1891

šŸ€ Rat Terrier šŸ€ Rat Terriers were developed, non surprisingly, to kill rats. Top notch ratters, general farm dogs, and sharing a close history with the American Feist, they became a staple part of southern farming families and are very common companions at modern equestrian events

šŸ— Catahoula Leopard Dogs šŸ— Obviously my favorite breed on the list, these dogs helped settle America as multi purpose hunting, tracking, treeing, herding, and guardian dogs; all jobs they still commonly preform today. Catahoulas are the Louisiana State dog and more famously, Snick is featured in our Adventure Canine logo !!

🐾 American Pit Bull Terrier 🐾 Pitties are a strong loyal breed with a bloody history of bull baiting and dog fighting, I will not shy away from the true history of this breed. But in modern times they have evolved into family dogs, farm dogs, and fantastic competitive weight pull dogs

šŸ’™ Blue Lacy šŸ’™ the Texas state dog has a drive and temperament similar to the Catahoula, and was developed as a multi purpose, tough hunting and working southern Cur dog that excels in tracking

River earned her keep today. A window block I use to maintain airflow without allowing the animals out was blown out of the window by the windstorm today, and my boy cat, Calamity, got out. Hannah and I searched for him but couldn’t find him, so we brought out River and Sammy to track him. They found his track in the wind and rain and followed it through the barn, hayloft, into the shed, and finally under one of the snowmobiles. Sam and I were checking behind hay bales when River found him, and became a living fence to let Hannah catch him without him running. I’m happy he’s back inside and safe, no worse for wear, just a bit cold. River and Sam got a several mile run and a pig ear for a reward for being the best.
