I was finishing up the ledge on a gate for a customer in Washington State, and while running it through my jointer, a large chunk chipped off. That was a clear sign I need to change the blades! I was about to trash the ledge and start over, but then I realized that woodworking is often about embracing mistakes and getting creative. So, I decided to cut the edges at a 50° angle, which removed the broken corner. It was an easy fix and saved me about 30 minutes. Works for me :)”

A customer from DC reached out requesting a 103-inch standalone gate to keep their pup and baby safe on the porch. Normally, I’d hesitate due to the challenges of working with larger pieces of lumber on my equipment, but my wife stepped in to safe the day 😉

This project turned out to be more work than I anticipated, but I experimented with some new techniques for the decorative edge and legs. I think it ended up looking pretty professional! I took photos along the way—let me know what you all think. I also sent some photos to the client, and they’re thrilled with the results.
