Lead Dog

Lead Dog Do you need help with your dog? You can have a well behaved dog & a better bond - let's get started! Please see my services page for some of the ways I can help.

My name is Andrea Logan and I have been helping dogs and their people my whole life. How can Lead Dog help you?

• I will help you understand your dog’s behavioral issues and help you find the right training style for you and your dog.

• I will help you build a better bond with your dog.

• I will coach you on how to be the leader your dog NEEDS you to be – a kind, confident, consistent and calm

leader.

• We’ll make a practical plan for you to have the harmonious relationship with your dog you’ve always wanted. I offer a courtesy phone call to see if I can help you. I have been in animal welfare for over 20 years, helped rehabilitate challenging foster dogs, and helped friends, family and pet owners in the community with their dogs for some time. I have worked with several professional dog trainers of various methods and immersed myself in all things dog: taking courses for dog trainers, reading many dog training and behavior articles and books, watching videos. My personal dogs have been through all levels of obedience, and have participated in agility, nose work, rally and barn hunt. Our current dog, Luke, has been in training continually for his entire first year with us, and will continue for the foreseeable future. I have experience with positive training, balanced training, leadership, dog sports and the way your energy effects your life with your dog. The current training and dog behavior climate is at best confusing for dog parents, and filled with judgement and even shaming at worst. You can easily waste time and money going down the road with the wrong training style. Worse yet, it can leave you frustrated and damage your relationship with your dog. Maybe it already has. I can help you sort through the options, navigate resources and come up with a detailed holistic plan to build the relationship with your dog you have always wanted. Didn’t you envision that living with a dog would be fun and joyful? It can. Be the leader and partner your dog NEEDS you to be. I’m here to share my years of experience to help you and your dog. I can save you time, money and heartache by getting you on the right track now with customized recommendations. You can benefit from my experience and education. I have weeded through the overwhelming amount of information about dog training and behavior so you don’t have to.

The screwworm outbreak is effecting animals primarily in Florida, Texas, and New Mexico. Although it is more concentrated in those places, it is important to have it on your radar.

Sadly it has halted the rescue of dogs in some of these states to prevent the further spread of the disease.

DOGE cut funding for the New World screwworm monitoring program and then reportedly ignored ranchers warning the parasite was working its way to the U.S.

Are you training your dog or bribing your dog with treats?

If you are showing your dog the treat and asking them to sit, you are probably bribing them. Do they only sit if you have a treat in front of them?

A treat should be a reward. You ask the dog to sit, the dog sits, and you say Good or Yes and reward them with praise and food.

If your dog only listens to you with treats involved, we have some work to do. Reach out today for help!

Is your house chaos when people come over?

Here are some ideas to change things up.

1. Try changing your doorbell sound. If your dog has a very strong emotional response to the existing doorbell, it will be easier to give her a new association with a new sound. Don’t actually use it as your new doorbell until you’ve conditioned a very positive response for your dog (or trained her to perform an appropriate operant behavior in response to the new chime). When your training is completed, then substitute the new doorbell in place of the current one.

2. Get a toy: You can teach your dog that the doorbell is her cue to run to fetch a toy. You can toss the toy for her to fetch (have her offer a sit first!), and thus focus her energies on the toy instead of the doorbell or your guests. You can also teach her to take the toy to your visitors, and construct a polite greeting behavior that includes sitting until they toss the toy for her.

3. Treat 'n Train: This unique remote treat-delivery gadget was developed by veterinary behaviorist Sophia Yin for a variety of training and behavior applications, including door manners! The concept is simple. When you push a button, the unit beeps and delivers a treat. Your dog makes the classical association between the “beep” and treat, and quickly learns (operantly) to run to the machine when she hears the beep. The beep becomes the cue to run to the machine.

We've been working with adorable Skye! She is also a good student and very loving and fun.

Having gotten to work and mastered the basics, Skye's parents asked this week what else could we teach Skye? We are excited to help them with their continued training!
