⚠️ Bridge Closure & Emergency Repair Notice – Clarksburg – Route 8 (River Road) over Hoosic River -Temporary Bridge Installation
🚧 Construction is expected to last approximately two (2) months. MassDOT expects to be ready to start construction of the temporary bridge on August 10, 2026. In order to complete the temporary bridge installation and clear the site by October 9, 2026, ahead of the Columbus Day weekend- saturday work may take place to help maintain the project schedule. Please note that all timelines remain weather dependent.
During construction, Route 8 will be closed. The following detour routes will be in effect:
🚙 • Northbound Detour: Route 8 North → Henderson Rd → East Rd → Daniels Rd → Walker St → Union St → Route 8
🚘 • Southbound Detour: The reverse of the northbound detour route applies for southbound travelers.
Following a bridge inspection and subsequent structural analysis, it has been determined that the subject bridge must be closed to traffic unless immediate repair action is taken.
The safety of the traveling public is MassDOT's highest priority. In response, MassDOT will be installing a temporary Acrow Panel bridge at the existing location to maintain Route 8 travel.
This work is being undertaken on an emergency basis due to the accelerated deterioration of the existing structure. The current bridge structure is 66 years old.
The temporary bridge will be placed over the existing structure, and new temporary abutments will be constructed behind the existing ones to provide the necessary support. The temporary bridge will have 2- travel lanes. Sidewalk will remain open.
MassDOT has engaged Clayton Davenport Trucking to perform the installation of the temporary bridge.
Please note that the installation of the temporary bridge will impact East Road at the south corner of the bridge. MassDOT's District office will work closely with the contractor to explore all feasible options to establish -one way- access from Route 8 onto to East Road after placement of the temporary bridge.
The existing bridge has reached the end of its useful service life. MassDOT is actively working to advance a full bridge replacement project and is in the process of programming this bridge for complete replacement.
MassDOT appreciates the patience and understanding of the traveling public, local residents, and businesses during this necessary emergency work.
