Olive wants to remind everyone to give their monthly heartworm prevention! Whether you use Heartgard, Tri-Heart, or another product, continuing to give it year round GREATLY reduces the risk of your pet contracting heartworm. This disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and can infect both dogs and cats, so wherever there are mosquitoes, there is a chance your pet can contract heartworm. If left untreated, heartworm is a deadly disease and it is easily preventable! We also recommend testing yearly to ensure your pet is safe.

The number of positive heartworm cases has seemed to sky rocket in our area; it seemed to have tripled since last year and other clinics are seeing the same trends. More than a million pets are infected annually, and the Northeast has recently become a hotspot for it. Our clinic averages 1-3 cases of heartworm disease per year, and within the last year we have seen 7 cases, with the majority testing positive in the last 2 months.

These products are available by prescription only at your vet’s office or online pharmacy such as Chewy. For more info and statistics about heartworm disease, please visit www.heartwormsociety.org

It's Black Fly Season! Black fly (or buffalo gnat) bites are red, itchy and resemble a "bullseye"! Treatment is often unnecessary, and the skin reaction typically resolves in 24-48 hours. If your pup's tummy looks a bit like this image after a day outdoors... don't panic! Take a picture and send it our way so we can confirm. We have had a few confirmed cases of black fly bites in the past 2 weeks. Learn more about black fly bites here:
