A walk shouldn’t feel like 30 minutes of correcting your dog.

June wasn’t being “bad.” She simply needed a clearer picture of what we wanted—and a reason that mattered to her.

Because June is exceptionally smart, eager to please, and strongly motivated by connection, Valency was able to tap into that drive using clear leash communication, precise timing, praise, affection, and some extremely persuasive snacks.

In about one minute, the idea clicked.

That doesn’t mean June was completely trained in 60 seconds. It means she understood the assignment. Now we practice around real-world sights, smells, and sounds until that understanding becomes reliable.

They’re also tiny chaos machines with teeth, no impulse control, and absolutely no respect for your schedule.

You don’t really want to spend every walk managing tension on a leash.

You want a dog who understands where to be—and chooses to stay connected to you.

Toby has made incredible progress with his walking. During this early-morning walk with Boo, Clint briefly drops the leash to demonstrate how well Toby now understands the heel position.

Instead of wandering off, Toby moves closer to Clint and continues walking beautifully beside him.

The leash is still there for safety. But it is no longer doing all the work.

That is an important difference.

Good training is not about physically holding a dog in position forever. It is about teaching the dog clearly enough that the behavior begins to hold itself together.

Toby still has more to learn, but he is coming along wonderfully.

This was briefly demonstrated by a professional trainer in a controlled setting. Please keep your dog safely leashed unless their training, environment, and reliability support otherwise.

Five minutes.

That's how long it took to completely change the direction of Toby's training.

No, we didn't "fix" Toby in five minutes.

But we did interrupt a pattern that had been keeping him stuck.

Meet Toby, an 8-month-old Husky/Pit mix who wasn't comfortable around people. Every walk looked the same: pulling, planting his feet, and trying to escape anything unfamiliar.

This wasn't just about bad leash manners.

Every time Toby rehearsed panic, his body practiced panic too. His heart raced, stress hormones surged, and his brain became more convinced that the world was something to fear.

The longer that cycle repeated, the stronger it became.

That's why it's so important to interrupt the pattern instead of allowing it to continue.

A common mistake is trying to build confidence by comforting a frightened dog with constant petting, soothing voices, or treats while they're actively focused on fear.

The intention is kind.

But to the dog, it can sound like we're saying,

"Yes... this is exactly how I want you to respond."

So instead, we gave Toby a job.

A more purposeful walk.

Frequent changes of direction.

U-turns.

Sudden stops.

One simple responsibility:

Stay with me.

As Toby focused on that job instead of everything that worried him, his attention shifted, his body relaxed, and the foundation for confidence began to grow.

We didn't teach heel first.

We taught connection.

Everything starts with the walk.

That's where dogs learn to connect with their humans, trust calm leadership, and build the foundation for confidence and all future training.

This is only the beginning of Toby's journey.
