ves life is the dream — and it’s 100% achievable with the right balance of structure, confidence building, and clear communication. As alumni and lifelong students of behavior and learning, we approach our training like higher education: thoughtful, science-backed, and customized to your dog’s needs. We take a maximum of three dogs at a time, giving each one focused attention and individualized coaching — no conveyor-belt training, no giant group classes where your dog gets lost in the crowd. You’ll not only see change — you’ll understand it. We teach you how to read your dog, motivate them, and maintain progress at home so results stick. While we’re serious about positive outcomes, we keep the process relaxed, upbeat, and fun — because training should build trust and joy, not tension. Our head trainer, Valency, also brings a professional background in therapeutic massage with extensive experience rehabilitating anxious dogs and those recovering from joint issues. Her gentle, intuitive approach helps dogs feel safe, confident, and comfortable in their own bodies, supporting both emotional balance and physical well-being throughout training. Life in SLO County is meant to be savored — let us help you relax and truly live the SLO Life.

Your dog should be able to come along without every outing becoming an event.

Before Thorn walked into the pet store, we did a quick parking lot tune-up: recall into heel, reconnect, and then carry that calm focus inside.

From automatic doors and toy aisles to small animals, checkout, a dog walking past—and another dog rolling by in a shopping cart—Thorn stayed calm, connected, and responsive.

That is the point of real-world obedience. Not a dog who only performs in a quiet room. A dog who can be included in more of your actual life.

At SLO Life Dog Training, our limited-enrollment board-and-train programs are customized around the places, routines, and distractions that matter to your family.

The Top 3 Family Dog Breeds:

#1 Bernese Mountain Dog
Sweet, gentle, goofy, and usually very family-oriented. Basically a weighted blanket with eyebrows.

#2 Saint Bernard
Calm, affectionate, patient, and built like a living couch. Amazing family dogs — just know you’re signing up for drool, hair, and a dog that takes up his own zip code.

#3 Labrador Retriever — specifically a show-line / bench-line Lab
Friendly, trainable, social, and usually a great fit for active families. But be careful: a high-drive field-line Lab can be less “family companion” and more “espresso shot with paws.”

Breed matters — but training, structure, exercise, genetics, and the individual dog matter more.

The right dog should make family life better, not turn your house into a live-action rodeo.

At SLO Life Dog Training, we help family dogs become calm, reliable companions for real life.

Can your dog do this at a cafe?

BamBam came with me to a Santa Maria Starbucks for a business meeting, went to place, settled quietly, and behaved like a gentleman.

Then he got rewarded at the right time — with a pup cup, of course.

This is what structured training looks like in the real world: calm, controlled, and useful in everyday life.

If your dog can’t relax in public, there is a training gap.

At SLO Life Dog Training, our limited-enrollment Board & Train programs build calm public manners, impulse control, and reliable obedience where it actually matters.

Your front door should not require a helmet.

If your dog turns every knock, delivery, or guest arrival into a full-contact rodeo, that is not “just excitement.”

That is a lack of impulse control at one of the most important thresholds in your home.

In this video, Panda is learning that the front door is not a launch pad. It is a place to slow down, listen, and wait for direction.

Door manners matter because guests, kids, delivery drivers, and older family members should not have to brace for impact just to walk into your house.

If your dog turns the front door into a rodeo chute, don’t wait for them to buck somebody into next week.

Who could walk your dog if you left town tomorrow?

When we first adopted Bonnie, she pulled like a freight train. She even dragged Clint across a parking lot.

Finding someone comfortable handling a 75 lb dog who pulled and reacted around small dogs wasn't easy.

Today, after completing the same balanced training system we teach our clients, Bonnie is a very different dog.

While we were away last week, our neighbors watched the dogs.

Their 7-year-old walked Bonnie on a loose leash without a second thought.

For us, that's one of the biggest measures of success.

Not whether the trainer can handle the dog.

Whether the people in your life can.

🐾 More freedom. Less stress. Same goofy grin.

For families who love to travel, heel isn’t just obedience — it’s real life.

This is Thatcher, a Cane Corso trained by Master Trainer Garret Wing at American Standard Dog Training. At our weekend seminar, we worked on helping him walk calmly next to rolling luggage — because for his owners, travel is part of life.

At first, the luggage was new, weird, and suspicious. Fair enough. Rolling suitcase: scary haunted robot.

Instead of letting him fixate, we gave him a job: focus, move with the handler, and build confidence one step at a time.

This is the kind of training that helps dogs become easier to live with at home, in public, on trips, and around the real-world distractions that actually matter.

We're back from North Carolina after two days of advanced hands-on training with Master Trainer Garret Wing of American Standard Dog Training.

One thing we love about dog training is that the learning never stops.

We spent the weekend working dogs, refining our skills, exchanging ideas with trainers from around the country, and continuing to invest in becoming better trainers for the dogs and families we serve here on California's Central Coast.

We're excited to bring those lessons back home and continue investing in better training for Central Coast dogs.

🐾 More freedom.
🐾 Less stress.
🐾 Same goofy grin.

We’re excited to be heading to North Carolina this weekend to continue our education with Master Trainer Garret Wing of American Standard Dog Training.

Every opportunity to learn from great trainers helps us better serve the dogs and families who trust us with their training.

Looking forward to bringing new ideas home. 🐾

Pet stores are not “easy mode” for dogs.

They’re packed with food smells, toys, other dogs, people, squeaky things, sliding doors, treat displays, and the spiritual presence of every dropped biscuit since 2009.

That is exactly why we train in places like this.

Thorn is practicing a calm heel in a real pet store because obedience should not fall apart the second life gets interesting.

For puppy owners, this matters early.

That cute puppy who pulls toward every person, dog, smell, and shelf can grow into an adult dog who has learned that excitement means “drag my human like luggage with opinions.”

Training gives your dog a job.

Heel means: stay with me.
Down-stay means: settle here.
Recall means: come back even when something exciting is happening.

At SLO Life Dog Training, our limited-enrollment Board & Train programs are built for real life: stores, parks, vet visits, guests, walks, and the everyday distractions your dog actually has to live around.

Puppies grow big fast.

Cute puppy chaos may feel manageable at 15 pounds. It gets a lot less cute when that puppy becomes a 100 lb adult dog at the vet, in public, around strangers, around other dogs, or anywhere life gets exciting.

This is BamBam holding a calm down-stay on the vet scale.

That skill does not happen by accident.

Real-world obedience gives your dog a job when the environment gets distracting, stressful, or new. It helps vet visits feel less like a wrestling match and more like a normal part of life.

At SLO Life Dog Training, our limited-enrollment Board & Train programs are built for real life: vet visits, public places, guests, walks, and the everyday moments where calm actually matters.
