Hi! Hi!
It's me, YumYum, Lead Shop Dog here at Haute Paws Grooming! Many of you may have noticed that there are a number of new baby deer in the neighborhood with their mamas. Mama deer can be intensely protective and may become aggressive if they feel threatened. Mama deer may pretend to charge, stomp her feet, or attack if she perceives us dogs or people as threats.
A couple of days ago, our neighbors across the street from us experienced an attack from a protective mama deer. Their dogs went out onto their covered deck when a mama deer that happened to be in the backyard spotted the dogs and charged at them full speed. The mama deer started aggressively stomping the dogs that were on the deck! Their mom ran out to save them, but the mama deer did not want to let up. The doggies managed to escape and run back into the house. Thankfully, injuries to the dogs appear to be minor, but they were traumatized. It could have been a lot worse.
Please take the proper precautions to keep us pups and yourselves safe during fawning season. This can include keeping us dogs leashed and supervising our outdoor play. You will also want to be sure to give all deer lots of space. And if you encounter a self-defensive deer, back away calmly. 👍
