Individual Assistance for Fire Victims

The Washington State Washington Emergency Management Division will be at Station 8 in Suncrest August 17 to August 20, from noon to 8pm. They will be able to meet with people directly affected by the Autumn Lane Fire.

They will also be accompanied by the American Red Cross.

The Incident Management Team is pulling up stakes for the Spokane Area Fires. They came in and did an amazing job getting up to speed and supporting each of the 3 fires. They will be departing Spokane tomorrow after handing this incident off to the DNR.

All three fires are at 97% containment--a planned number that DNR will eventually complete.

What will DNR be doing? They will still be working all three fires until they are comfortable with how it looks. They will then place it into patrol status for additional time. You will still see some out of area (and out of state) fire units still in and out of the fire's perimeter. They are part of the force left behind to help the local DNR finish things up.

Hwy 291 update: Hwy 291 is a top priority for the WSDOT. They have engineers working on how to handle the barren hillsides. They will also be working on taking out more trees that could pose a danger. Watch for workers on the side the road and flaggers (we do not have a time frame moving forward).

Copious amounts of equipment need taken back to the ICP in Spokane and tagged for return to the fire supply cache. Most of it will be cleaned and tested before returning to ready status. This photo is just a very small sample of what goes on at the end of a fire event.

EVAC Update (11am):

ALL evac levels will be going away today at 2pm. This includes each of the fires and the fire footprints.

Be aware that some fire units are still working in some areas (none in the immediate Suncrest area) so use caution. The lifting of evacuation levels does not mean the area is completely safe. There can be hidden stump holes and root channels. Trees may be unstable but not apparent from the outside and could topple at any point.

There will also be smoke and the occasional flame visible from the interior of the fire. Crews did such an amazing job that most every fire perimeter and home/structure perimeter was cleared to 300'--a higher standard than originally called for.

Town Hall meeting tonight at the Lakeside HIgh School at 6pm. This will be livestreamed here on our page and also our YouTube Channel. The links to both will be forthcoming.

There will be some stunning maps to show you a couple "what if" scenarios as well.

Our last regular update will be later this evening. We may put up a quick one once or twice, but the IMT is winding down and this will be turned over to DNR Saturday at noon.

We will be returning to our regularly scheduled programming.

Update (700pm):

As we stated earlier, Evac areas have been reduced across the lake and with the other fire footprints. The Autumn Lane Fire on this side of the lake still has a touch of work left to do. That should change tomorrow afternoon with more good news on the way.

The IR flights over night have looked great. By the end of the week, the IMT will be departing and the remainder of the fire footprints will be turned over to the DNR to finish the process. The goal at turnover is to have containment at 97%. It is currently sitting at 73% with the expectation of it going up tomorrow.

Many of the crews that have been working hard in our area have either already departed or will be soon. They have worked very hard to get these fires wrapped up and are a little bit ahead of schedule. They have been amazing.

Tomorrow evening at the Lakeside High School, the team will be hosting a Town Hall meeting at 6pm. It will also be streamed on line here on our Facebook and possibly the IMT's YouTube Channel. We will post the streaming options tomorrow.

We will have several (or more) of the original fire crews that were on duty that fateful day. We would love for you to meet them and bring any questions about the fire with you. There will be representation from State, County, and local levels, including your Fire District 1.

The really good news? Not much else to share!

If you lost anything in this fire or suffered damage and have not reported that, this is 1 of many opportunities to do so.

Be kind. Be nice.

Update (300pm):

Quick update:

You will see Evac levels drop completely on the South Spokane Side of the Autumn Lane Fire. That is because operations have been completed there.

On the Stevens County side (and Spokane north side) evac levels will remain in place with an expected update tomorrow. Crews continue to finish their work on the parts north of Hwy 291 and should finish up today or tomorrow.

Quick NOTE: Even as this event winds down, there will be some interior smoke and even small flames. That is perfectly normal. The containment line will be a 200' inward push, along with with 200' around any values at risk.

More to come as this portion of the incident starts to wind down.

Have a great rest of the day and stay tuned!

Update, 140pm

We are happy to announce the following changes to our evacuation levels:

All evacuation levels will be dropped except for the following areas:
1. The fire's main footprint (in Stevens County)
2. Except for the footprint in Suncrest south of Hwy 291 which will be a Level 1.

We are also announcing the opening of Swenson Road...

AND....

Hwy 291 will also be opening at the same time (edited: Yes, all the way into Spokane).

PLEASE be careful traversing these roads. Many will want to look at the fire damage/progression and take their eyes of the roadway. This could be an issue.

Also, as you progress down towards the city, you will start to see the massive devastation that took place during the Old Trails Fire. It can take your breath away seeing it in person.

Please respect those areas that have been hit hard and stay out of all the neighborhoods. Firefighters are continuing to work in those neighborhoods doing dangerous work.

We will have more information at our regular daily update later today.
