If you have a dog that bolts, a scared dog or a dog you don’t know that you are transporting, this tip is super helpful. Close the handle of the leash in your door. That way you can grab it before ever opening the door. (It also helps keep the dog from moving around a bunch in the car.)

A couple points to clarify:

-ideally an impact resistant crate would be used for transport
-seat belts and tethers are also good when used with harnesses

Unfortunately there are lots of instances where people can’t afford or don’t have these items so a leash on the door is better than nothing.

Clarifying point 2:

This post isn’t necessarily for owners. If you own dogs, yes you should have proper safety equipment. But a lot of people transport dogs for various reasons and cannot always have dog safety equipment on board. People find loose dogs.

People transport for rescues and don’t control what the animal comes with. People foster and are given “supplies” which rarely include seatbelts/tethers and harnesses. And sometimes people have too many dogs to have space for enough crates.

This is just a quick tip for people who don’t have other safety measures. If you have those, great. If this post can save one dog from getting hit by a car then I’m ok with it.

Earthworms are nature’s quiet heroes, processing over 20 tons of soil per acre each year. They create tunnels that let oxygen and water reach plant roots while transforming dead matter into nutrient-rich castings—five times more powerful than regular topsoil.

These little ecosystem builders boost beneficial microbes, improve drainage and drought resistance, and even help store carbon naturally in the soil. They play a big role in keeping our gardens and farms healthy without any noise or fuss.

Want to support these underground workers? Add organic matter, avoid disturbing the soil too much, skip synthetic chemicals, and keep the soil moist but not soggy. For every person on Earth, there are 1.5 million earthworms working hard right under your feet. 🪱🌱

When we picture a turtle or tortoise, it’s easy to imagine them tucked inside their shells like guests in a protective home.

But the truth is more profound — they are their shells. This remarkable structure is fused to their ribs and spine, forming an inseparable part of their skeleton.

It’s not dead armor; it’s living bone, laced with nerves that allow them to feel pressure, pain, and touch.

Whether aquatic like turtles or land-dwelling like tortoises, both perceive the world through their shells.

A stroke or tap may seem gentle to us, but their nervous systems interpret sensations differently, and it’s not always comforting.

Rather than guessing what feels good to them, let’s focus on respect — minimizing stress and handling with care.

These ancient beings carry not just their homes but their very selves on their backs — and that deserves our gentleness and awe.

Every time rescue is asked to take an owner surrender- we have to somehow make room on our little raft for that dog. When an owner says stuff like “I don’t have time to give them the best life” or “I have to move” or “they have too much anxiety” it really falls flat because that means if we bring them on the raft, another dog out there in the freezing water gets to die.

Every day in rescue we adjudicate life and death by gate keeping who can get on the boat.

Rescues and shelters are the tiny rescue boats.

The ship is our community at large.

The iceberg is comprised of careless owners, backyard breeders, and a$$hats who won’t spay/neuter.
