Pupdate from Nancy regarding Ella (Holly) from Scarlett’s Christmas litter of Biewdles. “Ella was groomed yesterday for the second time. She weighed 5.4 when she was spayed the end of April.“ Isn’t she gorgeous! I just love her coloring and the fact that she has stayed small! If you would like to be added to Scarlett’s next litter of Biewdles (1/2 toy Poodle, 1/2 Biewer terrier) message me.

I bought our dogs a pack of soccer balls with tags on the sides to make it easier for them to carry when retrieving the ball. Reese loves it! Paisley loves it, but she is already ripping the cloth tabs off of the ball. Paisley cannot have “stuffies” of any kind. She will literally tear it apart and eat every last bit of it including squeakers! We have had to induce vomiting on several occasions using 1ml of hydrogen peroxide per lb of body weight. It is unpleasant for them and you but can save your dog from an intestinal blockage if you know they have eaten something they should not have! I put the hydrogen peroxide in a syringe and sq**rt it into the back of her throat and make sure that she swallows it. “For reference, one teaspoon is equal to approximately 5 ml, so 1 teaspoon for every 5 pounds of body weight. You may repeat the dose once more if your dog does not vomit within 15 minutes.” Paisley has even eaten socks whole! She loves stuffed toys but for her own safety she cannot have them. I have tried every possible toy that is supposed to be indestructible and she always finds a way to destroy it. Hydrogen peroxide has saved her life more than once! It has to be given shortly after the dog has eaten something while the item is still in the stomach to be effective. Please supervise your puppies and dogs with all stuffed toys and any items left lying around the house such as socks. Rope toys are also dangerous as they can swallow the rope and it can be caught or wrapped around their intestines. Another item that is sold for dogs that is dangerous is rawhide. Rawhide can swell in the stomach and also cause an intestinal blockage. Please be sure to consult your vet.

Another photo from our Disney trip. Lady and the Tramp topiary. We saw dog statues, Topiary, robotic animated dogs, Pluto and Goofy, dogs used as service animals to help guest enjoy Disney and my favorite were the dogs used at the airport to sniff out drugs and explosives. We saw Labrador Retrievers and German Shepards used for this purpose and the dogs really seemed to be enjoying their jobs. Our trip just reinforced how important dogs are and how we couldn’t do life without them!

Our girls have been taking our dogs for walks in our fields again now that the weather is getting nicer. Sniffing provides mental stimulation and relieves stress in dogs, it also allows them to assess changes in their environment and helps to build their confidence. So take your dog on a walk, let them lead the way and give them plenty of time to sniff! It is like a mini staycation for your dog!Ticks are back so be sure to provide flea and tick protection. We use Seresto collars on all of our dogs and find it is a safe alternative to oral medication and can even be used safely during pregnancy and whelping.

Truth!

Truth!

If a puppy can hold his urine in a crate for a two hour nap, that does not mean that he can hold his urine when awake and active for two hours. We do cover this in the house and crate training section of our puppy course, (link in comments) but here is the jist of it.

A student wrote in with the "problem" that her puppy would go outside and p*e, and then come back inside the house and, ten minutes later, p*e again. Now, this "double and triple p**p and p*e" is a developmental stage and we do cover it in the puppy course. It's totally normal, it takes a while for them to learn to and/or be able to evacuate their bladder and bowels completely in one shot.

So I reminded her where the course material was on that and suggested she review it again.

And she replied to me, well, no it's not that because we are already onto the "Puppy's First Kegels" and the puppy can take a nap in a crate for two hours with no distress, so it can't be that the puppy has to go ten minutes after he goes outside.

Here's the thing. A puppy's ability to hold it is going to depend very much on context...that's what the "Toilet Tells" and "Potty Predictors" in the course are about. When a puppy (or a human) sleeps, they (we) produce an antidiuretic hormone that suppresses urine production.

That's why you can sleep 8 hours a night without needing to get up and urinate, or maybe urinate once. But if you work 8 hours in an office you will be urinating many times during the day.

Just an aside, some people don't produce a lot of that antidiuretic hormone and they need to get up many times a night to p*e, but normally you won't need to get up many times a night to p*e.

Yet another aside, as you (and your dog) age, you often will produce less of that antidiuretic hormone at night, which is why older people and dogs often need to go more frequently.

But the main point here is that sleeping in a crate is a biological context that is very, very, different from being awake and active.

And it's completely normal for a 15 week old puppy to p*e outside and then come inside and p*e again within a few minutes, especially if he's playing or excited...those states of emotional arousal stimulate the bladder and urine production and make it harder for the puppy to hold it.

I'm putting aside specific advice for house training because that's what the course is about. But I want to reassure puppy owners that:

🐶Double p*es are normal,

🐶A puppy's ability to hold urine depends on the context, and

🐶You can't set the bar for how long a puppy can hold urine by how long he can nap without needing to get up and p*e🐕.
