Woohoo! Oyster, Timmy, and Riley rocked our Saturday Middle School class this past 6-weeks. Their humans worked and played hard to improve and expand on all the skills they learned in Puppy/Elementary School. We are so proud of how far you've all come. Pawsome job!

🐾 Exit/enter doorway with no pulling in dog-friendly buildings
🐾 Walk through a crowd on a busy urban sidewalk with people within 1-ft
🐾 Tolerate distractions
🐾 Appropriate reaction to city distractions: movement, noises and surfaces, etc.
🐾 Crossing street: Stop/wait at corner, cross under control with no pulling

"We have been working with The Exceptional Pet/Sandy to train our Black Labrador Luna for 3 years now! Luna is a high energy lab who loves people. She jumped on everyone and I had no clue how to train a dog.

Sandy is wonderful.. she is patient, loves Luna like her own, and incredibly approachable about training, tips, and the overall wellbeing of your dog. I can't say enough about the different training opportunities we have had from basic obedience, loose leash walking, dogs around town, tricks, and therapy work.

"But I only know how to sit in the kitchen!" said many dogs everywhere...

Ever notice how your dog’s perfect “sit” at home magically disappears at the park? That’s not stubbornness—it’s science! Dogs don’t naturally understand that cues like “sit” or “stay” mean the same thing in every place. They learn best through repetition in different environments—a process called generalization.

That’s why we train with variety: different people, places, and distractions! The goal? A dog who listens anywhere, not just on your living room rug.

💡 Helpful hints to build GENERALIZATION:
✔️ Practice cues in new rooms, outdoors, and during walks
✔️ Add in different people giving the cue
✔️ Change surfaces—try grass, concrete, carpet, etc.
✔️ Start easy and gradually add distractions
✔️ Keep sessions short, positive, and fun!
